IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A restaurant has placed an advertisement for waiters and waitresses in your local newspaper. Write a letter to the restaurant, applying for the job. In the letter
- explain what you are currently doing
- describe your suitability for this area of work
- say when you can attend an interview.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
I saw your restaurant's job advertisement on the jhang newspaper. As seen in the advertisement , there are vacant positions for waiters.
Currently, I am unemployed. I worked as a customer support agent with Talabat in my last job. Talabat is a food services chain. They provide food delivery services. The job was to resolve user's query efficienlty and effectively while mantaining a respectful tone. One of the most common scenario that I faced, customer getting concernced for there late delivery. Among many responsibilities, one of the responsibility in the waiter's job is to show hospitality to the customer. With the positive and humble attitude good rapport can be created with the customers. I think I already have the attributes and the skill set this job needs.
I think I deserve an interview atleast. Please provide me a chance to prove myself. I am available on weekdays from 8am-8pm. I look forward for the interview.
Yours Sincerely,
Hamas Tariq

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address the main points by explaining that you are unemployed, describing your previous customer-support work, and giving your weekday availability. The experience with Talabat is relevant because it connects customer service with hospitality. However, your suitability is asserted more than demonstrated: “I already have the attributes and the skill set” would be stronger with a specific example of handling a customer concern. The interview request, “I deserve an interview at least,” sounds demanding rather than professional, and the letter does not clearly ask the restaurant to arrange a meeting. Develop your evidence and make the request more courteous and direct to cover the purpose more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a generally clear sequence: you refer to the advertisement, explain your current situation and experience, then state your availability and close. This makes the main message easy to follow. Paragraphing also separates the application details from the closing. However, the middle section moves abruptly from your former duties to the responsibilities of a waiter, and the short statements “Talabat is a food services chain. They provide food delivery services” interrupt the progression. Link your customer-service example directly to the skills needed in the restaurant, and use clearer transitions between experience, suitability, and your interview request. The overall arrangement is coherent, though some connections feel mechanical or under-explained.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for an application, including “customer support agent,” “resolve,” “hospitality,” and “rapport,” which helps communicate your experience and suitability. There is some range beyond basic job-related terms. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “vacant positions,” “customer getting concerned for their late delivery,” and “the skill set this job needs.” Spelling errors in “efficienlty,” “mantaining,” and “concernced” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural professional phrasing, for example, “openings for waiters,” “customers concerned about delayed deliveries,” and “the skills required for this role.” This would make your vocabulary more precise and appropriate to a formal application.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
Your letter includes mostly straightforward sentences and some attempts to connect ideas, such as “while maintaining a respectful tone.” The meaning is generally understandable, but errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and punctuation remain. For example, “One of the most common scenario that I faced, customer getting concerned…” is not a complete, well-formed sentence; it needs a clear subject and verb, such as “One common situation I faced was a customer becoming concerned about a late delivery.” In “one of the responsibility,” the plural form is needed after “one of.” There are also inconsistent spaces before commas and a missing comma after the greeting phrase. Practise accurate complex sentences and proofread agreement and punctuation.
