Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear hiring manager

I am writing to express my enthusiastic interest in the waitress position recently advertised in our local newspaper. With my strong work ethic, strong interpersonal skills, and dedication to delivering exceptional customer service, I am eager to contribute to the welcoming atmosphere at your restaurant.

To be honest, it is been tough time and we been trying our best to deal with lots of unexpected problems that are faced to us.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You establish the purpose clearly by applying for the waitress position and give relevant information about being a senior-year student and wanting part-time work. You also mention interview availability, so the main points are present. However, suitability is asserted rather than demonstrated: “strong interpersonal skills” and “strong work ethic” would be more convincing with a brief example, such as experience helping customers or working in a team. The timing is also unclear: “in nexts weeks” does not identify a specific day or time, and the reference to weekends is complicated by your classes. Develop these details so the restaurant can assess your fit and arrange an interview easily.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The letter has a recognisable structure: an opening application, a paragraph about your current situation, and a final paragraph about availability. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression within the paragraphs is sometimes unclear. The sentence beginning “Because” is separated from the idea it explains, and the personal details about family difficulties interrupt the focus on your application. The final paragraph combines exam preparation, interview timing, and weekend availability without making their relationship clear. Use complete, connected sentences and organise the body around the task points—current activities, relevant suitability, and interview times—to make the message easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some appropriate application vocabulary, including “position,” “advertised,” “work ethic,” and “customer service,” which helps establish a professional purpose. There is also an attempt to use more formal phrasing, such as “express my enthusiastic interest.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “authentic way” for managing time, “finance of my family,” and “unexpected problems that are faced to us.” These choices sometimes make the intended meaning less clear. Aim for natural phrases suited to a job application, and avoid repeating “strong” in the opening. More precise vocabulary for your experience and availability would also make the letter more persuasive.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, and the opening sentence communicates your purpose clearly. However, errors in verb forms, sentence construction, and punctuation are frequent enough to make parts of the letter difficult to read. For example, “it is been tough time” and “we been trying” omit necessary auxiliary verbs, while “I been working” and “I will able to attend” also need corrected verb forms. The sentence beginning “Because” is a fragment, and several sentences run ideas together without clear punctuation. Practise accurate present and present-perfect forms, and check that each sentence has a complete main clause before adding more complex structures.
