Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear sir, i saw an advertisement of your restaurant on newspaper. i was looking for a job and this job is best for me according to my experience and schedule. I am a university student and my course is communication studies so, apparently i am good in communication. I am looking for part time job since a long time. I want to experience different jobs for my better CV. As i told you, i am a communication studies so, i am good in communication but more than that i am a good chef. Might be surprising for you but i am cooking food from my childhood. My father and grandfather was so good in cooking so, this is in my genes. By the way i am a student therefore, i will be free after 12pm. I can attend an interview whenever you call after 12pm. Hopefully you will consider me for this job and you would not get any complain about me.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you explain that you are a university student studying communication, describe communication and cooking as relevant strengths, and say you are available for an interview after 12 p.m. These details make the application relevant and your suitability is understandable. However, some points are less fully developed: for example, you do not explain how your cooking experience would help in a waiter or waitress role, and “I want to experience different jobs for my better CV” focuses more on your benefit than the restaurant’s needs. A more formal, confident closing and one or two specific examples of customer-service skills would make the application more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The ideas follow a generally sensible order, moving from the advertisement and your current studies to your experience and interview availability. Basic links such as “therefore” and “by the way” help connect points, but the progression is not consistently smooth: “By the way” introduces availability too casually, while “As I told you” repeats an earlier point rather than advancing the application. The response is also presented as one continuous block, so the reader has little visual guidance. Organise it into short paragraphs—for example, current situation, suitability, and availability—and use more precise transitions or remove repeated linking phrases. This would make the letter easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough relevant vocabulary to communicate the main message, including “advertisement,” “communication studies,” “part time job,” and “interview.” However, the range is limited and several expressions are awkward or too informal for a job application. “Good in communication” is not a natural collocation, “good chef” does not clearly describe waiter suitability, and “you would not get any complain” is imprecise. Phrases such as “in my genes” are conversational and do not strengthen a formal application. Aim for more precise employment vocabulary, such as customer service, interpersonal skills, and availability, and choose collocations that fit the role. This will make your meaning more professional and exact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the main message remains understandable. However, errors in sentence boundaries, agreement, articles, and punctuation are noticeable. For example, “i saw” and “i am” need capital letters, “My father and grandfather was” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “I am a communication studies” uses an incorrect sentence structure. Several clauses are joined with commas or repeated “so,” making sentences difficult to control. Practise forming accurate complex sentences with conjunctions, and check agreement and articles when editing. For instance, “I study communication studies, which has helped me develop strong communication skills” expresses the idea more clearly and accurately.
