Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear concern,

Its me absolute pleasure to write this letter to you mentioning, I am keenly interested to apply fo rthe position "waiter" following your advertisement in the local newspaper.

I am currently working as a server in a local cafe since last two years. My key resposibilities includes serving the coffee, taking orders from the customers and dealing with them. Sometimes I also manage the the cashier in absence of the manager.

Besides, I have also completed a diploma course on "Hospitality and restaurant management" after my high school, which even strengthened my ability to apply for this position. With my academinic background and professional experience I believe, I would be a great for this position.

It would be a great opportunity for me to join your team. I am okay to sit for an interview in the upcoming week. Let me know your convenience. I am looking forward to your response.

Best regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address the main requirements by explaining that you work as a server, describing relevant duties and hospitality training, and offering to attend an interview in the coming week. These details make your application relevant and give the reader a reasonable basis for considering your suitability. However, some points are less fully developed: for example, you mention serving coffee and taking orders, but could explain how your customer-service skills or cashier experience would benefit this particular restaurant. The interview arrangement is also somewhat vague; offering specific days or times would make it easier for the employer to respond. Overall, the key parts are covered, though the evidence of suitability and availability could be more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening stating your purpose, paragraphs about your current work and qualifications, and a closing about the interview and response. The progression is easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “Besides” and “With my academic background and professional experience” help connect related information. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger organisation. To make the flow more polished, use paragraphing and transitions that reflect the letter’s purpose more naturally, and avoid abrupt or unclear phrasing such as “Let me know your convenience.” A more direct request for the employer to suggest a suitable interview time would create a smoother, more professional ending.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for an application, including “server,” “responsibilities,” “cashier,” “diploma course,” and “professional experience.” This gives you enough language to communicate the main points, but several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision and naturalness. Examples include “resposibilities,” “academinic,” and “fo rthe,” as well as the unnatural expressions “sit for an interview” and “I would be a great for this position.” Some phrases, such as “dealing with them,” are also too general for a job application. Proofread spelling and choose more conventional professional collocations, such as “attend an interview” and “a strong candidate,” to make your meaning clearer and more polished.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, including “With my academic background and professional experience I believe…” and the sentence about managing the cashier when the manager is absent. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “My key responsibilities includes” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “I have been working as a server … for the last two years” would express the continuing time relationship more accurately than “I am currently working … since last two years.” The opening sentence also has an awkward structure and punctuation. Review agreement, tense with “since/for,” articles, and sentence boundaries; these corrections would improve control while preserving your range.
