Student answer (Band 6.0)
I am writing to apply for the position of waiter advertised in your local newspaper.
Currently, I am a university student, studying business administration.I am looking for a part-time job to gain practical experience and support my educational expenses.
I believe I am suitable for this position because I am friendly, hardworking and responsible.I have good communication skills and can interact with different types of people. Moreover,I am a quick learner and can work under pressure and handle customers politely.
I would be available to attend an interview at any time convenient for you. However,I would prefer an interview in the afternoon. Please let me know if you require any further information.I cordially attend to this interview and hope I can fulfill your criteria and your restaurant's demand also.I hope you will give me this opportuity to prove myself in your organization.
I will look forward to hearing from you soon.
Your faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you explain that you are a university student studying business administration, give relevant personal qualities and communication skills, and state when you can attend an interview. The purpose is clear from the opening, and the closing expresses interest in the role. However, suitability is supported mainly by general claims such as “friendly, hardworking and responsible”; a brief example of customer-facing experience or a specific situation in which you handled pressure would make this more convincing. The interview arrangements are also somewhat mixed: you say you are available “at any time” but then prefer the afternoon. Clarifying your availability and developing the evidence for your suitability would make the response more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: application, current situation, suitability, interview availability, and closing. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and connectors such as “Moreover” and “However” show relationships between ideas. The progression is generally easy to understand, but some linking is mechanical, and the final interview paragraph combines several purposes—availability, a request for further information, enthusiasm, and a hope of meeting the restaurant’s needs. The transition from “at any time convenient” to “prefer an interview in the afternoon” also creates a small inconsistency. Grouping related points more carefully and using a clearer closing sequence would make cohesion more flexible and natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the application, including relevant terms such as “part-time job,” “practical experience,” “communication skills,” and “work under pressure.” The tone is mostly appropriate for a formal letter. However, several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “I cordially attend to this interview” does not clearly express enthusiasm, and “your restaurant’s demand also” is an awkward way to refer to the employer’s needs. “Fulfill your criteria” is also less natural than saying you meet the requirements. There are spelling and form issues, including “opportuity,” and the repeated use of broad adjectives could be replaced with more specific language. More accurate collocations and a wider range of job-related vocabulary would strengthen the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, including “I believe I am suitable for this position because…” and “I am looking for a part-time job to gain practical experience and support my educational expenses.” Most ideas remain understandable, and errors rarely prevent communication. Some punctuation and sentence-boundary control needs attention: there are missing spaces after commas and full stops in “student, studying” and “friendly, hardworking,” while “Moreover” and “However” should be separated clearly from the preceding sentence. The closing phrase “I cordially attend to this interview” is also grammatically awkward. In addition, “Your faithfully” does not use the correct form of the sign-off. Proofreading these patterns and varying sentence structures more confidently would improve accuracy.
