IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A restaurant has placed an advertisement for waiters and waitresses in your local newspaper. Write a letter to the restaurant, applying for the job. In the letter
- explain what you are currently doing
- describe your suitability for this area of work
- say when you can attend an interview.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir/madam,
I am writing to apply for the position of waitress advertised in your local newspaaper. I am very interested in this job and would like to be considered for the position.
Currently, I am a student and I am looking for a part time job to gain work experience and improve my communication skills. I believe that working in your resturant would be a great opportunity for me.
I considered myself suitable for this job because I am hardworking, responsible and friendly. I enjoy communicating with people and helping others. Moreover, I can work well in a team and manage my time properly. Although I do not have much professional experience, I am willing to learn new skills.
I am available to attend an interview at any time after 2 p.m on weekdays. I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Salina Kunwar

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three requested points: you explain that you are a student seeking part-time work, describe relevant qualities, and give an interview time. The application purpose is clear and the tone is generally appropriate. However, the suitability section relies mainly on broad claims such as “hardworking, responsible and friendly” and “work well in a team”; one brief example of customer service, teamwork, or responsibility would make these ideas more convincing. Your current situation could also be developed slightly, for example by explaining your availability around your studies. The response is three words below the required minimum, so add a little relevant detail rather than padding the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is organised clearly, with a conventional opening, separate paragraphs for your current situation and suitability, and a closing that states your interview availability. The ideas progress logically, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “Although” help connect points within the suitability paragraph. The sequence is easy to follow and the reader can identify each part of the application without difficulty. To make the organisation feel more polished, you could use a more deliberate transition between your current studies and the qualities you would bring to the role, and ensure the closing sentence is followed by appropriate letter punctuation. Overall, the structure supports the purpose effectively.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a straightforward job application, including “work experience,” “communication skills,” “responsible,” and “available to attend an interview.” These choices make your meaning clear. However, several expressions are quite general or repetitive, particularly “job,” “position,” and the list of personal qualities; more precise language related to customer service would show greater flexibility. There are also spelling errors in “newspaaper” and “resturant,” which detract from the professional impression, and “I considered myself suitable” is an inaccurate word choice for the intended meaning. Proofreading and selecting more specific employment vocabulary would strengthen this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, such as “Although I do not have much professional experience, I am willing to learn new skills.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and the use of present forms is generally appropriate for describing your situation and availability. Some grammatical and punctuation issues remain: “I considered myself suitable” should use the present-tense form “consider myself,” and the time expression would be clearer as “after 2 p.m. on weekdays.” The salutation and closing also need consistent punctuation and capitalisation. These are limited errors that do not prevent understanding; careful editing would improve accuracy.
