Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Resturant Recruitement Team,
I hope you are doing well.
My name is Mohamed, and I am a postgraduate student who moved recently to the town. I am looking for an additional job to cover my living expenses; Therefor, I am writing to express my interest in joining the resturant's team as a waiter ready to start immediately.
I have a previous experince of working as a waiter for two years in a resturant at my home twon. These two years have been followed by working for one year as a branch manager after being recognised by the owner for my ability to micromanage and support newly hired waiters and waitresses consistently. Moreover, I am fluent in English and French, which could facilitate communication with non english speaking guests who visit frequently.
I am available for an interview for the next three days, so any time that is convinient to you during that period could work.
I am looking forward to hearing back from you.
Best regards,
Mohamed

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requested points: you explain that you are a postgraduate student seeking work, give relevant restaurant and management experience, and state when you can attend an interview. The details about two years as a waiter and a further year as a branch manager make your suitability clear, while the closing is appropriate for a job application. The response also maintains a clear purpose throughout. To make the application more fully developed, explain briefly how your management experience or language skills would benefit this particular restaurant, rather than relying mainly on listing qualifications. You could also identify the exact days or offer a specific interview time, making your availability more useful to the employer.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression from introduction and purpose, to relevant experience, to interview availability and a polite closing. Paragraphing separates these functions effectively, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” help connect your qualifications. The reader can follow the message without difficulty. Some connections could be more precise and natural: “These two years have been followed by” makes the relationship between your waiter and manager roles sound less direct than it is, and “so any time that is convenient to you” is a broad transition to the interview request. A more direct sequence, with each paragraph focused on one point and clearer links between your experience and suitability, would make the organisation feel more flexible and polished.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant employment vocabulary, including “postgraduate student,” “living expenses,” “branch manager,” and “fluent,” which communicates your background and qualifications. There is some useful specificity in describing your experience supporting newly hired staff. However, spelling errors and several imprecise or unnatural choices reduce the accuracy of the vocabulary: “Resturant,” “Recruitement,” “experince,” and “convinient” should be corrected, while “micromanage” can suggest excessive control rather than supportive leadership. “Non english speaking guests” is also better expressed as “guests who do not speak English.” Aim for accurate spelling and conventional professional collocations; this will make your existing range sound more natural and credible in a job application.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes a mix of straightforward and more developed sentence forms. For example, the sentence beginning “These two years have been followed by working…” attempts to connect your earlier role with your promotion, and the final availability sentence uses a subordinate clause. Meaning remains clear overall, but some grammatical and punctuation errors persist. In “I am looking…; Therefor, I am writing…,” the semicolon is not used appropriately, and the following word should not begin with a capital letter. The phrase “after being recognised by the owner” also leaves the subject of the recognition less explicit than it could be. Use a full stop or a suitable linking word between complete clauses, and make the person performing each action clear. These adjustments would improve control while preserving sentence variety.
