Student answer (Band 8.5)

Many young people decide to take a gap year between finishing school and entering university. During this period, they may work, travel, or experience life outside of education. I agree that this experience can provide benefits for individuals when they return to their studies, although there can also be some disadvantages.

Firstly, taking a year out can help young people develop important life skills that are difficult to learn in a classroom. For example, working in a company can teach them communication, teamwork, and responsibility. These skills can be useful at university because students need to manage their time, complete projects, and cooperate with others. Moreover, travelling can help young people become more independent and understand different cultures, which can improve their confidence and open-mindedness.

Another advantage is that a gap year allows students to think more carefully about their future goals. Many teenagers are unsure about what subject they want to study at university. By gaining work experience or exploring different places, they may discover their interests and choose a career path more wisely. For instance, a student who works in a hospital during a gap year might realise that they want to study medicine.

However, taking a year away from education may also have negative effects. Some students can lose their study habits and find it difficult to return to academic life after a long break. In addition, not everyone has the same opportunities to travel or find good work experience, especially those from families with limited financial resources.

In conclusion, I believe that taking a gap year is generally beneficial because it helps young people gain practical skills, become more mature, and make better decisions about their future. Although it may create some challenges, the advantages are greater if the year is planned carefully.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that the gap year is beneficial while acknowledging potential drawbacks. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the points regarding the acquisition of 'soft skills' like teamwork and the opportunity for career reflection. The argument is balanced and logically supported with relevant examples, such as the student working in a hospital to clarify their interest in medicine. The conclusion effectively synthesises the main points, ensuring the position remains clear throughout the essay. The response meets all requirements for a Band 7.0 or 8.0, as it is fully developed and relevant.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, starting with the benefits of life skills, moving to career clarity, and then addressing counter-arguments. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'Another advantage', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the relationship between ideas is clear. The flow is natural, and there is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive usage, fitting the criteria for a Band 8.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'academic life', 'career path', 'financial resources', and 'open-mindedness'. While the vocabulary is accurate and conveys meaning well, it lacks the 'less common' or 'sophisticated' lexical items that would push the score into the Band 8 or 9 range. The word choice is consistently natural and precise, with no errors in spelling or collocation that impede communication. It is a solid performance that demonstrates good control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.5

The student demonstrates a good command of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional and concessive clauses (e.g., 'Although it may create some challenges, the advantages are greater...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is accurate. There is a good mix of simple and complex forms, and the grammar does not interfere with the clarity of the message. While the range of structures is effective, it does not quite reach the level of 'full flexibility' required for a Band 9, but it comfortably sits within the Band 8 criteria.
