Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to address the core of the prompt, which asks about the benefits of taking a 'gap year' (a year out between school and university). Instead, the essay discusses the general importance of school and university education. The student does not engage with the concept of a gap year or the specific benefits of non-academic experience, such as travel or work, in the context of preparing for higher education. Consequently, the response is largely off-topic. While a position is stated in the introduction, the supporting arguments do not relate to the prompt's specific question, resulting in a failure to develop the required ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is unclear because the content does not follow the prompt. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In conclusion' and 'In the school education', but they are often used mechanically or inappropriately due to the lack of logical flow between sentences. Referencing is sometimes confusing, such as in the third paragraph where the transition from university life to internships feels disjointed. The overall structure is present, but the lack of logical connection between the ideas and the task requirements hinders the coherence of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying on basic terms like 'life', 'students', and 'education'. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and incorrect word choices, such as 'stage fear', '10th gread', and 'in feature' (instead of 'in the future'). The range of vocabulary is insufficient to express complex ideas or discuss the topic with any precision. While the meaning is generally understandable, the lack of variety and the frequent errors in word formation and collocation limit the score significantly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that affect readability. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'The life of college students are' and 'School education is also plays'. Punctuation is also problematic, with inconsistent spacing around commas and periods. The sentence structures are mostly simple, and attempts at more complex sentences often result in errors, such as 'to they have to travel'. These frequent errors, combined with limited control over basic grammar, indicate a lack of accuracy and range.
