Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position in favour of taking a gap year. However, the ideas are somewhat repetitive and under-developed, relying on general statements about travel and employment rather than deep elaboration. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met; the student's response contains only 230 words, falling short of the 250-word minimum specified for Task 2. This under-length aspect negatively impacts the overall task achievement, preventing the response from reaching higher bands. To improve, the writer needs to ensure they write at least 250 words and extend their main body arguments with more specific explanations and examples.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay has a basic structure with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. However, the organisation suffers from a lack of clear progression, and sentences within paragraphs feel repetitive. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'To start with', 'Apart from this', and 'To conclude', which feel mechanical rather than fluid. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final conclusion is extremely brief and consists of a single fragmented sentence. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it harder for the reader to follow the train of thought seamlessly.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited and displays noticeable errors. Words are frequently misused, such as 'translate into informative' instead of 'informative', 'tour the nations' instead of 'touring different countries', and 'suituation' instead of 'situation'. Spelling errors like 'completley', 'fourthcoming', 'Nowdays', 'thier', and 'benefical' also detract from the quality of writing. While the writer attempts to use some topic-related vocabulary like 'curriculum', 'professional experience', and 'employment', the numerous inaccuracies in word choice and spelling hinder effective communication at times.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The response shows a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are simple or poorly constructed complex sentences that contain frequent errors. For instance, the opening sentence is a long, run-on structure: 'Taking Gap after school studies just because of travelling or getting job experience is good for the students which translate into informative as it help to understand the curriculum and get relief before starting academic life.' Subject-verb agreement errors ('it help') and tense inconsistencies are prevalent. Punctuation is also neglected, with missing periods and commas leading to fused clauses. Errors frequently cause difficulty for the reader.
