Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position that they strongly agree with the idea that a gap year benefits students returning to higher education. Relevant ideas are introduced, such as gaining self-reliance, real-world skills, adaptability, and career clarity. However, the response is severely truncated, reaching only 172 words against the 250-word minimum requirement. Furthermore, the essay trails off abruptly in the middle of a sentence due to the length shortfall, leaving the main body paragraphs under-developed and the conclusion missing entirely. Because it fails the minimum length requirement and leaves parts of the task undeveloped, it falls into the Band 5 category for Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a generally logical organizational structure with standard introductory signals like 'To begin with' and 'Furthermore'. Paragraphing is attempted, although the final paragraph is incomplete and cuts off mid-sentence. Cohesive devices are used, but due to the abrupt ending, overall progression is hindered. Referencing is mostly clear within the completed segments, though mechanical transitions occasionally appear. When evaluating what the writer was able to produce before the text stopped, the organizational framework aligns best with a Band 6, as there is a coherent overall arrangement even though cohesion becomes faulty towards the end.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'invaluable maturity', 'emotional maturity', 'adaptability', and 'financial responsibility'. However, there are notable spelling and typographical errors, such as 'aft6er', 'foster' instead of 'fosters', 'Navigation' instead of 'Navigating', 'expose individual' instead of 'exposes individuals', and 'effe3ctively'. Despite these errors, communication is not severely impeded, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended arguments. This performance is consistent with the descriptors for Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'While some argue that this break can interrupt academic momentum , I strongly agree that...' and 'When these students enter university , their emotional maturity...'. There are several grammatical errors and typos, including missing pluralization ('a students return' instead of 'students' return'), incorrect verb forms ('foster' instead of 'fosters', 'travelling expose individual'), and punctuation spacing issues. However, many sentences are grammatically sound, and the errors rarely impede overall comprehension. This balance of mixed structures and controllable error frequency places the grammar at a Band 6.
