Student answer (Band 6.0)
For many young people, few things are more crucial than gaining work experience or travelling. In many developed and developing countries, a substantial amount of money is allocated to education, as it often necessitates the use of various resources. Nowadays, many would agree that contemporary society has nearly transcended its traditional boundaries and will soon become boundless in its pursuit of education for the benefit of learners. Nevertheless, I firmly believe that the experience of non-academic life this offers benefits the individual when they return to education.
Naturally, breaks in the form of development are considered more essential for gaining work experience, creating inexhaustible facilities for benefits that are not available from other sources. Moreover, it demonstrates unparalleled benefits for education, permeating and enhancing every conceivable sector of society. Since learners seek work experience through breaks, ample investment in education is imperative for their well-being. If this is adopted by governments and individuals alike, many learners stand to benefit significantly. A year out after education in nations such as Kenya, for instance, has emerged as a pivotal model for the well-being of learners, delivering enhanced services for their young people.
Under certain circumstances, young people may shy away from taking breaks due to a range of challenges. While taking a year out between finishing school and starting university is widely embraced in many societies worldwide, learners in many nations frequently contend with fear when striving to implement this approach. Therefore, the notion of taking a break after school is not always appealing. From economic, social, and national perspectives, if the goals of young people dictate that taking a year out between finishing school and starting university is not merely an option but an imperative, they may choose to embrace it.
However, it is the responsibility of young people to evaluate the role of breaks and determine whether they will do more harm than good. Thus, it is evident that fostering an interest in educational breaks is beneficial.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear stance that a gap year brings benefits to subsequent higher education. However, the development of ideas suffers from a lack of concrete, relevant examples and contains several digressions regarding government spending on education rather than focusing specifically on work experience, travel, and academic readiness. Phrases like 'a substantial amount of money is allocated to education' drift away from the core topic of the benefits of non-academic life. The ideas are presented but remain somewhat repetitive and under-developed, particularly in the second and third paragraphs. Consequently, the response aligns best with the Band 6 descriptor, as it addresses all parts of the task and presents a relevant position, but some ideas lack depth and specific support.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a generally coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct stages of the argument. However, the progression between sentences can feel strained or mechanical due to overly complex or slightly unnatural transitional phrases, such as 'Naturally, breaks in the form of development are considered more essential' and 'Under certain circumstances, young people may shy away'. Cohesive devices are sometimes used rigidly or inappropriately, which affects the flow of ideas. For instance, referencing between sentences occasionally becomes opaque, requiring the reader to work harder to follow the logical connections. These characteristics place the response firmly at Band 6, where cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, and referencing is not always completely clear.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student attempts a wide and formal vocabulary range, incorporating less common items such as 'transcended', 'imperative', 'pivotal model', and 'inexhaustible facilities'. However, many of these collocations and word choices feel unnatural or contextually inaccurate. For example, 'inexhaustible facilities for benefits' and 'breaks in the form of development' do not represent standard usage in English, and several sentences become dense and confusing. There are also occasional errors in word choice that detract from precision. Despite these limitations, the vocabulary used is adequate to convey a general meaning, and spelling is accurate throughout. These features are characteristic of Band 6, demonstrating an adequate range of vocabulary with some misuse of less common items.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating various subordinate clauses and multi-clause structures such as 'While taking a year out between finishing school and starting university is widely embraced in many societies worldwide, learners in many nations frequently contend with fear...'. There is good control of basic punctuation and sentence boundaries. However, grammatical errors and awkward phrasing persist, such as 'if the goals of young people dictate that taking a year out... is not merely an option but an imperative, they may choose to embrace it', which is slightly convoluted. While these errors do not seriously impede overall communication, they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. The grammar profile aligns well with Band 6, featuring a mix of structures and control that allows meaning to come through despite some recurrent inaccuracies.
