Student answer (Band 6.0)

In contemporary society, many learners choose to take a break between finishing school and starting university in order to gain work experince or travel. I largely believe that the experience of non-academic life this offers benefits the individual when they return to education by elavating their mental welll-being and improving their concentration academically.

One particularly significant advantage associated with choosing to take a year out between finishing school and starting university in order to gain work experience or to travel is that it improves the mental well-being of the learner. This can largely be attributed to the fact that shooling may be demanding thus putting exess pressure on the student, which can have a considerable impact on young people. More importantly, this effect is not limited to academic stress, as it can also influence the mentall well-being of the learner by increasing the academic demands. A clear example of this can be seen in a school environment where learners are preparing for exams, thereby illustrating the wider consequences of stress in schools. Ultimately, this suggests that breaks can play a substantial role in shaping learners, particularly after a long study period.

Furthermore, breaks, can improve learners concentration. This can largely be attributed to the fact that it gives them some time to re-energise and face the real world. which can have a considerable impact on them when they retun to education. A clear example of this can be seen in Kenyan universities where learners take a year out befor returning to work. thereby illustrating the wider consequences of breaks in education. Ultimately, this suggests that taking a year out can play a substantial role in shaping learners academically.

To conclude, although many young people choose to take a year out between finishing school and starting university in order to gain work experience or to travel, the breaks are significantly important because it improves their concentration and mental-welbeing.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on whether taking a year out benefits individuals upon returning to education. The essay introduces relevant ideas, such as improving mental well-being and enhancing academic concentration. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, in the second body paragraph, the explanation circles back to academic demands rather than fully exploring the positive impact of non-academic life. Additionally, the example regarding Kenyan universities in the third paragraph is somewhat weak and lacks robust elaboration. Despite these limitations in full idea extension, the prompt is adequately addressed throughout the response, earning a solid Band 6.5 descriptor alignment for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response exhibits a clear overall arrangement with appropriate paragraphing, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as 'One particularly significant advantage' and 'Furthermore'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen in punctuation errors ('Furthermore, breaks, can improve') and awkward transitions. Additionally, the logical progression within paragraphs occasionally falters due to repetitive phrasing and minor mechanical flow issues. Overall, the organizational structure is coherent and easy to follow, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'contemporary society', 'substantial role', and 're-energise'. However, there are several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'experince', 'elavating', 'welll-being', 'shooling', 'exess', 'mentall', 'retun', 'befor', and 'mental-welbeing'. These lexical errors and spelling mistakes occur frequently enough to distract the reader, although they do not completely impede communication. These characteristics place the lexical resource firmly within the Band 6 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures like 'This can largely be attributed to the fact that...'. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several punctuation and spacing errors, such as missing spaces after commas and periods ('world. which', 'education. A clear'), as well as minor structural awkwardness in sentence construction. While complex structures are attempted, they are occasionally faulty, and the frequency of punctuation errors places this text at a Band 6 level for grammatical range and accuracy.
