Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the benefits of taking a gap year, such as gaining work experience, communication skills, financial support, and personal growth through travel. However, the development of ideas is limited and somewhat repetitive. The writer expresses a clear position that taking a gap year is beneficial for maturity and readiness for university, supporting this with examples like personal experience and travel. While all parts of the task are addressed, the ideas would benefit from deeper elaboration and clearer supporting examples to reach a higher band level. Consequently, the performance aligns best with the Band 5 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The essay lacks proper punctuation, making it read as a continuous run of ideas with almost no periods or commas to separate clauses and sentences. Paragraphing is attempted with a basic introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, but internal logical progression is heavily obscured by the absence of punctuation and sentence boundaries. Cohesive devices are minimal and basic, such as 'Firstly' and 'Secondly', but referencing is frequently unclear, and the lack of basic sentence structure creates significant obstacles for the reader.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, with frequent spelling errors such as 'differnet', 'style', 'carm', 'indepented', 'differnets', 'valueable', and 'outsides'. While the student attempts some topic-related vocabulary like 'work experience', 'historical landmarks', and 'cultures', the limited control over word formation and spelling restricts the range. Errors in word choice and spelling are noticeable and occasionally cause strain for the reader, fitting the Band 4 profile closely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
Grammatical control is extremely weak throughout the text. The response consists almost entirely of run-on sentences lacking terminal punctuation. There is a very limited range of structures, and attempts at complex sentences are faulty and unpunctuated. Frequent errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'student learn', 'travelling is also benefits'), tense consistency, and sentence boundaries cause severe difficulty for the reader in parsing the meaning. This performance is characteristic of a Band 4 response.
