Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the advantages of taking a gap year, such as travelling, spending time with loved ones, and relieving stress before university. However, the ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed. While the student clearly states a position in the introduction, the supporting points in the body paragraphs tend to be repetitive and lack sufficient extension or detailed examples. For instance, the mention of a Hindustan Times survey in the third paragraph is vague and generalised rather than providing a well-supported argument. To move to a higher level, the writer would need to fully develop each main idea with deeper explanations and concrete examples rather than relying on circular reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays some overall organisation with basic introductory, body, and concluding paragraphs, and employs basic cohesive markers such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'To Conclude'. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the logical flow is hindered by repetitive statements and mechanical transitions. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen with confusing pronouns and disjointed sentence connections. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks smooth linking between sentences. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to ensure that each sentence builds logically upon the previous one and that cohesive devices are used more naturally to create a seamless flow of ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The student relies heavily on basic, repetitive words and phrases, such as 'individuals', 'studies', and 'beneficial'. There are noticeable lexical errors, including word form and choice mistakes such as 'academic gap' instead of 'gap year', 'doves one' instead of 'loved ones', and 'stres free'. These errors and the restricted range of vocabulary cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from demonstrating flexibility or precision. To improve, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire by incorporating less common academic vocabulary, ensuring accurate word forms, and paying closer attention to spelling and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing exhibits a limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few attempted complex forms that are often faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'There are lots of individuals choose', incorrect verb tenses and forms such as 'It is helps' and 'it is plays', and awkward prepositional phrases like 'return for to study'. These frequent errors frequently cause difficulty and strain for the reader. To progress to a higher band, the writer needs to increase their control over basic grammar, reduce the frequency of errors in simple and complex structures, and improve overall sentence construction and punctuation.
