Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is widely acknowledged that students take a gap year after completing school to gain real world knowlwdge or some people wants explore new places before starting universities. While there may be some justification for this perspective, I firmly believe that it has positive benefits for students like experiencing reality and have better understanding of their thoughts.

The most compelling arguement in favour of this view is that it offers clarity towars their future. This can be attributed largely to the career they want to pursue. A particularly pertinent example is student who took a year off before starting university has more maturity than those who start university instantly after graduating school. Consequently, they have more ideas in solving problems. Furthermore, it offers ability to resist and confidently face a challenge.

Equally significant is the fact that it helps student to gain awareness in solving real world problems. In essence, many school leavers experience high level of exhaustion due to exams and academic pressure. Taking time off can help them recover emotionally, improve their mental well-being, and return to education with greater motivation and concentration. This, in turn, can make them more aware and independent before entering university, further substantiating my position.

In conclusion, although it has some demerits like loss of academic focus and feelings of social separation, I remain firmly of the opinion that it is important for students to take year off in order to be more concious and independent, primarily because of its implications for making a successful career

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position regarding the benefits of taking a gap year. The ideas presented are relevant, such as gaining career clarity and emotional recovery from academic burnout. However, some parts of the response are more fully developed than others, while other ideas remain slightly under-developed or general. For instance, the discussion on emotional well-being is introduced with a strong rationale regarding exam pressure, but the link back to how this specifically aids university readiness could be extended further. The response satisfies the requirements for the given band by establishing a clear overall stance and sustaining it through to the conclusion, showing glimpses of more extended support seen at higher levels.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression throughout the paragraphs. Information and ideas are generally linked together well, beginning with an introduction of the topic and the writer's stance, followed by body paragraphs exploring clarity of future goals and problem-solving awareness, and concluding with a summary. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'Furthermore' and 'In essence', though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each major point given its own section. To reach a higher level, the flow between sentences could be made more seamless by reducing reliance on formulaic connectors and ensuring precise referencing throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task and attempts less common lexical items, such as 'pertinent', 'substantiating', and 'demerits'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that occasionally detract from precision, including 'knowlwdge', 'arguement', 'towars', 'student' instead of plural students, and 'concious'. Collocations are sometimes awkward, such as 'have better understanding' or 'loss of academic focus' used alongside social separation. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they reflect the limitations characteristic of this band level. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to exercise greater accuracy in word forms and spelling, and select more natural collocations when attempting sophisticated phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response makes use of a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as in sentences beginning with 'While there may be...'. There are some grammatical errors in punctuation, articles, and subject-verb agreement throughout the text, such as 'some people wants', 'student who took', and missing articles before singular countable nouns like 'year off'. Despite these errors, the meaning is rarely obscured, and communication is maintained. The punctuation and sentence structures generally stay within the boundaries of this level, showing a basic control over complex forms while retaining occasional faulty patterns. A greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and more consistent grammatical control would be required to advance further.
