Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially, earning this band because the position, while stated, is not always clear or consistently maintained throughout the essay. The introduction attempts to address the prompt by stating, 'I agree to this statement about to travel and also work experience,' but the ideas presented in the body paragraphs remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the arguments regarding travel focus narrowly on feeling fresh and learning history, while the discussion on work experience outlines basic job roles without fully exploring how these non-academic pursuits specifically benefit an individual upon returning to education. To reach a higher level, you should ensure that all parts of the prompt are explored in depth, with fully extended supporting ideas that directly connect gap year experiences to future academic success.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays some organization with basic paragraphing and clear introductory signposts like 'To commence with' and 'In conclusion,' placing it at this level. However, there is no clear overall progression of ideas, and cohesive devices are frequently repetitive or inaccurate. For example, transition phrases such as 'In addition,' 'Moreover,' and 'Additionally' are overused without smoothly linking the underlying logic between sentences. Furthermore, referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in phrases like 'tell the interesting history about that places,' where pronoun and demonstrative reference fails to maintain clear links. To improve, you need to use a wider variety of cohesive devices naturally and ensure that your sentences flow logically from one point to the next to build a more cohesive argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
Your lexical resource is limited but minimally adequate to convey a basic message, resulting in this band placement. You attempt to use less common vocabulary, but noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling cause some difficulty for the reader. Examples include 'integrel' instead of integral, 'howover,' 'relevence,' 'prominents,' and 'tradditions.' Additionally, collocation and phrasing are often awkward, such as 'gain work experience or to travel have become and integrel part' and 'everyone have a busy routine.' To move up to a higher band, you must expand your vocabulary range and focus heavily on accurate word forms, spelling, and natural collocations so that your writing communicates ideas smoothly without distracting errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical structure of this essay relies on a very limited range of sentence patterns, with frequent errors that cause difficulty for the reader. While you attempt some complex sentences, they are often faulty and contain issues with subject-verb agreement, verb forms, and prepositions. For instance, you write 'everyone have a busy routine' instead of 'everyone has,' and 'anyone get job in school' instead of 'getting a job in a school.' There are also noticeable errors in article usage and tense consistency throughout the text. To progress, you need to demonstrate a greater variety of complex grammatical structures and improve your control over basic syntax, word forms within grammatical patterns, and punctuation to ensure error-free sentences.
