Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given bar graph depicts the average hours spent by females per week based on age and educational qualification in the year 2009. The areas on which the research been held are working and work related activities, leisure and sports and household activities, the study was based on women from age 15 - 75 and the criteria of education was less than high school all the to bachelors degree and higher.

It is study clearly represents that females spend time on activities based on there age for instance, from the age of 15-19 women like to spend most there time in leisure and sports and minimal in other activities and just like them women who has less education also seem to spend most of there time in leisure and second is household chores. However in between the age of 20-34 they started to utilize there time more for work related or work activities and it was a substiantial growth from 7 hours a week to 27 hours a week till the age of 54 they tried to balance work and houshold activities, but a women with high school diploma equalize household activities and work.Howevere the degree holders seem trying to balance all three with 23-24 hours for work, 32-33 hours for leisure and sports, finally 16-17 hours for household. Eventually after 54 they started to focus on household and leisure activities and by the age of 75 time conserning to work was once in a blue moon only 1-2 hours a week, where leisure and sports involvements has became primary part and household thing was at a constant rate

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the three activity categories and make relevant comparisons across age and education, including the rise in work hours from about 7 to 27 and the very low figure for work among women aged 75 and over. However, the response only partially reports the chart’s main features. It lacks a clear, concise overview of the broad patterns, and some comparisons are inaccurate or unclear: for example, women aged 20–34 do not all show a steady rise in work, and degree holders spend about 27 hours working, not 23–24. The claim that women with a high-school diploma balance household and work is also not supported by the figures. Select the strongest overall trends and report them accurately, with a few well-chosen comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation: the opening introduces the chart, and the main paragraph moves between age groups and educational attainment. However, the response has no distinct overview and does not establish a clear progression from the age data to the education data. Several ideas are crowded into one long paragraph, while connectors such as “however,” “just like them,” and “eventually” do not always show the relationship between comparisons clearly. References such as “them” and “they” can also be difficult to follow. Use separate paragraphs for the overview, age patterns, and education patterns, and connect each comparison explicitly so the reader can follow the chart’s two groupings.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “average hours,” “leisure and sports,” “work related,” and “household activities,” and you attempt more varied expressions such as “substantial growth.” However, word choice and spelling errors are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning less clear. Examples include “the research been held,” “there” for “their,” “substiantial,” and “conserning.” Some phrases are also informal or imprecise for an academic report, such as “once in a blue moon,” “household thing,” and “like to spend.” Prefer precise, neutral language that describes the data, such as “spent the most time,” “declined sharply,” and “household tasks.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts longer sentences and uses some subordinate clauses, for example, “However in between the age of 20-34 they started to utilize their time more…” This shows an effort to vary sentence structure, but complex sentences are often faulty or difficult to follow. Errors include “the study was based on women from age 15 - 75,” “women who has,” and “a women with high school diploma equalize.” There are also run-on sentences and missing punctuation, particularly where several comparisons are joined with commas or no space after a full stop. Use shorter, controlled sentences, check subject–verb agreement and articles, and punctuate each comparison clearly.
