Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart given illustrates the average number of hours that women in different age groups and women in varying levels education spend on primary activities each week.

Overall, in the given bar graph, there are two set of components that are combined in a same graph. Firstly, they've given the average hours per week in selected primary activities. Secondly, education attainment of these women in the year 2009.

As we can see, that the age groups 15-19 and 65-74 spent most of their time by playing sports or doing leisure activites. In addition to this, there are fluctuations between the age groups 20 to 55, as most of the women spent their time working and doing household chores.

By far, high school graduates spent most of their time playing sports or taking care of their home. College or associate degree graduates spent most of the time working or playing sports. At last, bachelor's degree and higher spent most of their time working. In conclusion, household activities are given the least preference by every age group.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response attempts to summarize the data but fails to provide a clear overview of the main trends. While it identifies some categories, it lacks specific data points (numbers or hours) to support the descriptions, which is essential for an Academic Task 1 response. The analysis is quite superficial; for instance, stating there are 'fluctuations' without specifying the data makes the report vague. To improve, you must select key figures from the chart to illustrate your points rather than making general observations. The conclusion is also slightly inaccurate, as the chart shows that household activities are not necessarily the least preferred across all groups.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The second paragraph is essentially a meta-commentary on the graph structure rather than an analysis of the data. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In addition to this' and 'At last', but they are sometimes used mechanically or inappropriately. The referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between the age-based data and the education-based data is disjointed. Improving the use of linking words to compare and contrast specific data points would significantly enhance the coherence of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. Phrases like 'two set of components' and 'at last' are slightly unnatural in this context. There is some repetition of basic verbs like 'spent' and 'doing'. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise academic vocabulary related to data description, such as 'allocate', 'proportion', 'predominant', or 'marginal', and avoid informal phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'in a same graph' (in the same graph), 'there are two set' (there are two sets), and 'education attainment' (educational attainment). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to lower the score. You should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to improve accuracy.
