Average hours per week women spent in selected primary activities, by age and educational attainment, 2009
Student answer (Band 8.0)
The bar chart compares the average number of hours per week that women spent on three primary activiyies--working and work-related activities, leisure and sports, and household activites--according to age and educational attainment in 2009.
Overall, household activities accounted for the largest share of women's time, particularly among older women and those with lower educational qualifications. In contrast, time spent on work generally declined with age, while leisure activities remained relatively stable across all groups.
Among the age groups, women aged 15 to 19 worked the longest, spending 36.8 hours per week on worj-related activities, compared with only 6.9 hours on household tasks. As age increased, working hours gradually fell, reaching just 1.3 hours among women aged 75 and over. By contrast, time devoted to household activities rose steadily and peaked at 51.7 hours in the oldest age group. Leisure and sports fluctuated only slightly, remaining between 16 and 21 hours.
Regarding educational attainment, women with less than a high school diploma spent the most time on household work, whereas those holding a bachelor's degree or higher devoted the greatest amount of time to paid employment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and successfully selected key data points to support your summary. The comparison between age groups and educational attainment is well-integrated. You correctly identified the inverse relationship between age and work hours, as well as the peak in household activities for older groups. The data is accurately reported, and the response is well-structured to highlight the most significant features of the bar chart. No information is missing, and the summary is balanced and professional.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on age and education respectively. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you have used cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'By contrast', and 'Regarding' effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main analytical focuses. The flow of information is natural, and the relationship between the different categories is easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information precisely. Terms such as 'educational attainment', 'fluctuated', 'devoted', and 'paid employment' demonstrate a good command of academic language. While there are a few minor spelling errors ('activiyies', 'activites', 'worj-related'), these are clearly slips rather than a lack of vocabulary knowledge and do not impede communication. The range is adequate to describe the trends and comparisons accurately, showing a good awareness of style appropriate for an academic report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You have used subordinate clauses and comparative structures effectively, such as 'while leisure activities remained relatively stable' and 'compared with only 6.9 hours'. The grammatical control is generally strong, with most sentences being error-free. Punctuation is used correctly to manage complex lists and clauses. While there are minor slips, the overall accuracy is high, and the grammatical structures used are sufficient to communicate the data clearly and professionally.
