The bar chart below shows the average number of hours that women in various age groups and women with varying levels of education spend on primary activities each week.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The bar chart compares the average number of hours per week that women spent on work, leisure and household activities in 2009, according to age and educational attainment.

Overall, leisure occupied the most time for most groups, particularly among older women and those with lower educational qualifications. By contrast, working hours were highest among women of prime working age and increased steadily with education, while time devoted to household tasks generally rose with age.

Among the age groups, women aged 15–19 spent only 6.9 hours working but 36.8 hours on leisure. Working time then increased to around 27 hours among those aged 25–54 before falling sharply to 6.9 hours for the 65–74 group and just 1.3 hours for women aged 75 and over. Meanwhile, leisure reached a peak of 51.7 hours in the oldest group. Household activities rose from 6 hours among teenagers to approximately 21 hours for those aged 65–74.

A clear educational pattern is also evident. Women without a high-school diploma worked only 10.7 hours weekly and enjoyed 43.1 hours of leisure. In contrast, degree holders spent 27.4 hours working and 28.6 hours on leisure, while their household workload was the lowest, at 15.2 hours.
