IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the average number of hours that women in various age groups and women with varying levels of education spend on primary activities each week.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average hours per week women spent in selected primary activities, by age and educational attainment, 2009
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The provided horizontal bar graph demonstrates the average weekly hours dedicated by women to three primary activities, namely work-related tasks, leisure and sports, and household duties, segmented by age groups and educational levels for the year 2009. The data has been calibrated into hours.
Overall, it is clearly seen that leisure and sports consistently commanded the most time across all figures, whereas working hours exhibited a substantial increase with age up to the 45-54 before declining, and household activities gradually gained fame with advancing age. Educational attainment inversely affected leisure time but directly correlated with work hours.
At first glance, it is noticeable that looking at the age brackets, women aged 75 and older record the highest recreational time at approximately 51.7 hours per week, while working a negligible 1.3 hours. In contrast, women in their peak working years (ages 45 to 54) spend the most time at employment, which directly reduces their available free time. The trend of working related activities and leisure activities remained almost similar for the age of 25 to 34 group of women. However, across all age cohorts, leisure time consistently remains above 20 hours per week.
Moving further, regarding education a clear opposite relationship exists between academic qualification and free time. Women without a high school diploma average 38.9 hours of leisure weekly. This figure drops steadily as education rises, reaching a low of 28.6 hours for women holding degrees higher than a bachelor's. Subsequently, for these highly educated women, weekly work hours increase by roughly 16 hours compared to those without high school completion.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the data and provided a clear overview. You covered both the age and educational attainment categories, making relevant comparisons throughout. The data is accurately represented, such as noting the peak working years for the 45-54 age group and the inverse relationship between education and leisure time. To reach a higher band, ensure that you consistently include specific data points for all comparisons made, as some descriptions, like 'gradually gained fame', are slightly vague. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses all parts of the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'However', and 'Moving further' to transition between paragraphs and ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and the two main body sections. The referencing is generally clear, and the flow of information is smooth. To improve, ensure that the transition between the age-based analysis and the education-based analysis is even more seamless to avoid a slight sense of jumping between topics.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'educational attainment', 'inversely affected', and 'cohorts' appropriately. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, which adds precision to your writing. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'household activities gradually gained fame', where 'fame' is not the correct collocation for time spent on tasks. Using 'gained prominence' or 'increased' would be more natural. Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your points clearly and with some sophistication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control over grammar and punctuation is generally strong. For example, your use of subordinate clauses in 'while working a negligible 1.3 hours' is well-handled. There are very occasional minor errors, such as 'working related activities', which should be 'work-related activities'. These errors are non-systematic and do not impede communication. The overall grammatical control is high, supporting the clarity of your report.
