Average hours per week women spent in selected primary activities, by age and educational attainment, 2009
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The bar chart represents the average hours per week women spend in selected primary activities, by age and educational attainment. The data being represented in the bar chart is from 2009.
Age factor starts from 15 to 75 and over whereas educational attainment includes less than a high school diploma to bachelor's degree and higher. If we consider both factors at once and see the average hours spend in primary activities, Leisure & sports categories are ahead of others in both.
According to age, household activities increase with it. Working and work related activities fluctuate with time and eventually decrease.. Leisure and sports category see a decrease and then increase with age which suggests that since older people have more time for these activities.
Furthermore, educational attainment shows leisure and sports decrease as women attain higher education showing the lack of time for such activity. Consequently, it also shows increase in working and work related activities.
To conclude, higher education attainment shows increase in work related activities as they get more opportunities because of their qualifications.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response provides a general overview but fails to report specific data points or make meaningful comparisons. While you mention trends like 'household activities increase with age,' you do not provide any numerical evidence from the chart to support these claims. A Band 6 response requires a clear overview and the selection of key features; however, your report lacks the necessary detail to illustrate the data accurately. You have identified some trends, but the absence of specific figures (e.g., hours spent by specific age groups) makes the summary incomplete and prevents a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore,' 'Consequently,' and 'To conclude.' However, the progression of ideas is somewhat mechanical. The transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is abrupt, and the connection between the age-related trends and the educational attainment trends could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall flow feels a bit disjointed due to the lack of specific data integration to bridge the points being made.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'educational attainment,' 'fluctuate,' and 'qualifications.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'Age factor starts from 15 to 75' and 'Leisure & sports categories are ahead of others.' These phrases are slightly unnatural. To improve, you should focus on more precise collocations and avoid repeating the same words. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main message, but it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'average hours spend' (should be 'spent'), 'Leisure and sports category see' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'as they get more opportunities' (vague pronoun reference). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to affect the clarity of your writing. To reach a higher band, you need to demonstrate better control over sentence construction and ensure that your verb tenses and subject-verb agreements are consistently accurate.
