Student answer (Band 5.5)

This bar chart illustrates and compares the average number of hours that women of different age groups and women with different levels of knowledge proficiency spend on the everyday common activities every week for the year 2009.

Overall, it is clear from the graph that there are age groups shown from 15 to over 75 years, which includes three distinct activities that are linked to work, hobbies, sports and home-based tasks. The second information provided tells us about the educational status of women aging 25 and over.

looking into the details, women aged 15 to 75 and over shows a considerable increase in giving importance to their hobbies and other physical activities such as sports. A marked decline has been seen in women taking part in household chores. Lastly if we notice, there is an on and off situation for involvement in work related activities and is completely faded or halted in age 75 or over.

On the other hand, women with less than a high school diploma, high school graduates, having an associate degree or with a bachelor's degree shows more interest in free time and sport related activities. The other trends can also be seen the same in both women of diverse age groups and of different knowledge expertise being the working women, to the least and in between comes the women who are interested in house hold duties.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarise the data but fails to provide a clear, accurate overview of the main trends. While you mention age groups and education levels, the description of the data is vague. For example, you state there is a 'considerable increase' in hobbies, but you do not cite specific figures or compare the categories effectively. The analysis of the education section is particularly weak, as it lacks specific data points to support the claim that there is 'more interest in free time'. To improve, you must select key data points (e.g., the highest and lowest hours) to illustrate your points rather than making general, unsupported observations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the logical progression of ideas is often unclear. Transitions like 'looking into the details' and 'on and off situation' are somewhat informal and do not effectively guide the reader through the data. The referencing is also problematic; for instance, the phrase 'the other trends can also be seen the same' is ambiguous and does not clearly link back to the previous information. Using more precise cohesive devices such as 'In contrast,' 'Regarding,' or 'Conversely' would help improve the flow and clarity of your comparisons.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision required for academic reporting. Phrases like 'knowledge proficiency' and 'knowledge expertise' are unnatural in this context; 'educational attainment' would be more appropriate. You also use vague descriptors such as 'on and off situation' and 'completely faded', which do not accurately describe statistical trends. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise terminology related to data, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', or 'a significant proportion', and ensure your collocations are accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but accuracy is inconsistent. You have several subject-verb agreement errors, such as 'women aged 15 to 75 and over shows' (should be 'show') and 'the other trends can also be seen the same' (awkward phrasing). Additionally, some sentences are structurally confusing, such as 'the second information provided tells us about...'. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these grammatical slips prevents the writing from being considered fluent. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and clearer sentence construction will significantly improve your score.
