Average hours per week women spent in selected primary activities, by age and educational attainment, 2009
Student answer (Band 8.0)
The bar chart compares the weekly average number of hours that women of different age groups spent on three primary activities—work-related commitments, leisure and sports, and household tasks—in the year 2009.Overall, leisure and sports consistently occupied the largest share of time across almost all age categories, particularly among the youngest group. Conversely, time spent on domestic chores showed a steady upward trend as women aged, while work-related hours experienced a sharp initial increase before stabilizing in adulthood.Regarding leisure and sports, young women aged 15 to 19 dedicated the most time to these activities, averaging 36.8 hours per week. This figure experienced a gradual decline in the subsequent age brackets, reaching its lowest point at 27.4 hours for women aged 35 to 44, before rising slightly to 32.2 hours in the 45 to 54 demographic. In contrast, employment-related hours were minimal for teenagers aged 15 to 19, standing at just 6.9 hours weekly. However, this figure surged dramatically to 22.1 hours for the 20 to 24 age group and hovered around 26 to 27 hours per week for all older demographics, peaking slightly at 27.3 hours for those aged 45 to 54.Meanwhile, time allocated to household activities increased progressively with age. The youngest demographic spent the least amount of time on domestic responsibilities at a mere 6.0 hours. This figure climbed steadily through each age bracket, nearly tripling to peak at 17.3 hours per week for women aged 45 to 54.
