Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart illustrates the time (in hours) women of various age groups spend on primary activities weekly in 2009. Simultaneously, it gives the time expenditure data of women who have various level of education.
Overall, from the bar chart, eight age group data are obtained. Also, there are four data based on the educational levels of women. For leisure and sports purpose, women who are 75 or more than 75 years spend the most time on the bar chart. For household activities, 65 to 74 aged women spent the most of the time. Whereas, for working activities, 45 to 54 aged women spend the most.
First of all, for leisure and sports, women from 15 to 64 have almost similar time expenditure. They spend 26 to 36 hours on average in a week for leisure and sports. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task by summarizing the main features of the bar chart. You have successfully identified key trends across age groups and educational levels. However, the overview is somewhat mechanical and lacks a synthesis of the most significant trends. For instance, while you mention specific data points, you could improve by grouping information more effectively to highlight the overall contrast between age-related and education-related trends. The reporting of data is generally accurate, though some comparisons could be more precise to better reflect the 'main features' requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In contrast,' 'However,' and 'Lastly,' which help the flow of information. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, but the progression of ideas within paragraphs could be smoother. For example, the transition between age-based data and education-based data is abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring a more natural flow between sentences would enhance the coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'expenditure,' 'attainment,' and 'primary activities' appropriately. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'eight age group data are obtained' and 'most of the time.' While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, there is limited use of less common or more sophisticated lexical items. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and varied synonyms to avoid repetition of words like 'spend' and 'time.'
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'various level of education' (should be 'levels'), '65 to 74 aged women' (should be 'women aged 65 to 74'), and 'most among all.' These errors are frequent but do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct placement of adjectives. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
