Student answer (Band 5.5)

The bar chart reveals the amount of time women gave to primary activities each week , differentiated on the basis of age and educational achievements in 2009.

Overall, it was observed that women gave most of their time to leisure and sports activities regardless of their age and level of education.

Having a quick glance at age categories, it is found that , leisure and sports activities are the most preferable way of spending time for women from ages 15 to 19 , even though the share of it keeps decreasing as the age increases, it still comes out at the top. It reaches it's lowest share in the 35 to 44 age group but after that it keeps on increasing.

Analyzing the educational categories, a similar trend is seen as before where women spent most of their time on leisure and sports activities across all groups. Women with educational level of less than a high school diploma gave the most time to leisure activities. As the education level increases so does the time spent on work related activities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response provides a clear overview and identifies main trends. However, it lacks specific data points (figures) to support the descriptions. IELTS Academic Task 1 requires the inclusion of data to illustrate the points made. For instance, when mentioning that leisure time decreases with age, you should cite the specific hours for the 15-19 and 35-44 age groups. Furthermore, the analysis of educational categories is somewhat vague; mentioning that work-related activities increase with education is good, but providing the actual numbers would significantly strengthen the response and move it into a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from age-based data to education-based data. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall', 'Having a quick glance at', and 'Analyzing the educational categories'. However, the use of some devices is slightly mechanical, and the transition between sentences could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the information is presented in a way that is easy to follow, though the lack of specific data makes the comparison less precise.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use some relevant terms like 'educational attainment', 'differentiated', and 'preferable'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and repetitive phrasing. For example, 'gave to' is not the most natural collocation for time; 'devoted to' or 'spent on' would be better. The phrase 'educational level of less than a high school diploma' is a bit wordy. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise collocations and a wider range of academic vocabulary to describe trends and data points.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some punctuation errors, such as unnecessary spaces before commas (e.g., 'found that , leisure'). Additionally, there is a minor error with the possessive pronoun 'it's' (it is) instead of 'its' (possessive). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on proofreading for small mechanical errors and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures, such as using relative clauses or participle phrases to combine ideas more fluidly.
