Average hours per week women spent in selected primary activities, by age and educational attainment, 2009
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The bar chart compares the average number of hours per week that women in different age groups and with different levels of educational attainment spent on three types of primary activity in 2009: working and work-related activities, leisure and sports, and household activities.
Overall, it is evident that women aged 65 and over spent the most time on leisure and sports, while women aged 15–19 devoted the least time to work-related activities. In terms of education, the amount of time spent working increased as educational attainment rose, whereas leisure time showed the opposite trend. Household activities generally required fewer hours than the other two categories.
Looking first at age, women aged 15–19 spent only 6.9 hours per week on work-related activities, compared with 36.8 hours on leisure and 6 hours on household tasks. Work-related time then increased substantially, reaching 27 hours among those aged 25–34, before falling slightly to 20.9 hours for women aged 55–64. It rose again to 44 hours among those aged 65–74. Leisure time fluctuated, but was highest among women aged 65–74 at 44 hours. Women aged 75 and over spent 31.7 hours on leisure and 19.5 hours on household activities.
Regarding educational attainment, women with a bachelor’s degree or higher spent the most time on work and work-related activities, at 27.4 hours per week. This figure was considerably higher than the 10.7 hours recorded for women without a high-school diploma. By contrast, leisure time declined from 43.1 hours among the least educated women to 28.6 hours among those with a bachelor’s degree or higher. Household activity also decreased overall, from 20 hours to 15.2 hours per week.

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and selected relevant data to support your points. The comparison between age groups and educational levels is well-integrated. You successfully identified key features, such as the inverse relationship between education and leisure time, and the specific peaks in work-related activities. The data is accurately reported, and the structure allows for a logical comparison of the provided categories. The response is comprehensive and meets all the requirements for a high-band score by focusing on the most significant information rather than listing every single data point.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on age and education respectively. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you make effective use of cohesive devices such as 'In terms of', 'By contrast', and 'whereas' to link your points. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main analytical focuses. The information flows naturally, and the referencing is clear throughout the text. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive phrasing, and the overall structure is highly coherent, making the information very easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'educational attainment', 'fluctuated', and 'devoted' appropriately. The language is precise and fits the academic context well. You avoid repetition by using synonyms and varied phrasing to describe trends. While the vocabulary is accurate and sufficient, it could be pushed further towards a more sophisticated level to reach the highest band. For instance, using more varied verbs to describe data movement or more nuanced adjectives would enhance the quality. However, the current range is flexible and allows for clear, precise communication of the data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response displays a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses and comparative structures. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is excellent. You use a mix of simple and complex forms effectively to maintain the reader's interest and ensure clarity. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The accuracy is high, and the sentence variety is sufficient to demonstrate a strong command of English grammar. The writing is polished and professional, reflecting a high level of proficiency.
