The bar chart below shows the average number of hours that women in various age groups and women with varying levels of education spend on primary activities each week.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates the average number of hours per week that women spent on three different activities—working and work-related activities, leisure and sports, and household activities—in 2009. The figures are divided according to age group and educational attainment.

Overall, women aged 75 and over spent the most time on leisure and sports, while those aged 65–74 recorded the highest amount of time spent on household activities. In terms of education, women with less than a high-school diploma spent the most time on household activities, whereas women with a bachelor’s degree or higher spent the most time working.

Looking at age groups, women aged 15–19 spent only 6.9 hours per week working, compared with 36.8 hours on leisure and 6.0 hours on household activities. Among women aged 20–24, the figures were 22.1, 32.7 and 10.0 hours, respectively. Work-related activities generally increased among women in their 20s and 30s, reaching around 27 hours for those aged 25–34.
