Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the data but fails to provide a clear overview or a logical selection of key features. The information is presented in a fragmented manner, and the comparisons are often confusing or inaccurate. For instance, the comparison between age groups and educational attainment is muddled, making it difficult to follow the trends. The response lacks a clear focus on the main features, such as the overall dominance of leisure activities across all groups. To improve, you should group data logically (e.g., by activity or by age) and ensure that the figures cited are clearly linked to the correct categories.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks a logical structure. While there is an attempt at paragraphing, the progression of ideas is disjointed. Cohesive devices are either missing or used incorrectly, such as the repetitive use of 'it is crystal clear that' and 'to conclude'. The referencing is often unclear, leaving the reader to guess which data points belong to which category. The lack of effective linking words between sentences makes the text feel like a list of isolated observations rather than a cohesive report. Improving the use of transition signals and ensuring each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would significantly enhance the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'spending the number of hours' and 'showing more interest' are basic and do not demonstrate the range required for a higher band. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'over aged' instead of 'older women' or 'the elderly'. The response relies heavily on repeating the same verbs and nouns throughout the text. To achieve a higher score, you should incorporate a wider variety of topic-specific vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'accounted for', 'predominant', and 'educational background'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The grammatical range is limited, consisting mostly of simple sentence structures. There are frequent errors in sentence construction, punctuation, and article usage, such as 'the 55 to 64 aged women' and 'as compare to'. Many sentences are run-on or lack proper punctuation, which hinders readability. The use of complex structures is largely absent or attempted unsuccessfully. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring subject-verb agreement, and using a variety of complex sentences (e.g., using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions) to connect ideas more effectively.
