Student answer (Band 5.5)

THE PROVIDED BAR CHART ILLUSTRATES AVERAGE HOURS PER WEEK SPENT BY WOMEN IN 2019, IN DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES LIKE WORK, LEISURE AND SPORTS, AND HOUSEHOLD CHORES, BY SPLITTING FEMALES INTO TWO CATEGORIES. THE FIRST GROUP HIGHLIGHTS FEMALES BELONGING TO DIFFERENT AGE GROUPS, WHEREAS THE SECOND ONE SHOWS WOMEN WITH THEIR EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS.

IT HAS BEEN OBSERVED THAT LEISURE AND SPORTS ACTIVITIES GET THE MOST HOURS SPENT PER WEEK CONSISTENTLY, AS AGE OF WOMEN INCREASES. BUT WITH AN INCREMENT IN AGE AFTER 50 MAINLY, HOURS SPENT BY FEMALES ON WORK RELATED ACTIVITIES GETS PLUMMETED GRADUALLY WITH LEAST AT THE AGE OF 75 AND OVER.

ON THE OTHER HAND, WE HAVE NOTICED THAT, WITH A SOAR IN EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS, TIME SPENT BY FEMALES ON SPORTS AND LEISURE ACTIVITIES CONSTANTLY DECLINES. SIMILARILY, IF WE HAVE A LOOK AT WORK RELATED ACTIVITIES, HOURS SPENT SURGE UP AS EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT RISES.

SO CONCLUDINGLY, WE HAVE SEEN A TREND IN 2019, WHERE THE FEMALES TEND TO SPEND MORE TIME TO THEIR WORK RELATED ACTIVITIES AS THEIR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND BECOMES BETTER, WHILE WITH AGING, THIS DURATION SPENT DECLINES.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response provides a general overview of the data, but it fails to meet the requirements for a high band score because it lacks specific data points. While you identify trends, you do not include any actual figures from the chart (e.g., specific hours for different age groups or education levels). IELTS Academic Task 1 requires the selection and reporting of main features supported by data. By omitting the actual numbers, the response remains too vague and fails to provide the necessary evidence to support your observations. To improve, ensure you select key data points to illustrate your comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs for each category, and a concluding summary. The use of cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'Similarly', and 'So concludingly' helps guide the reader through the text. However, the transition between the introduction and the body is somewhat abrupt, and the overall flow could be improved by using more sophisticated linking phrases. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is clear, though the lack of data makes the logical development feel somewhat thin.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a reasonable range of vocabulary, using terms like 'educational attainment', 'plummeted', and 'surge'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'get the most hours spent' is unnatural; a better phrasing would be 'account for the highest number of hours'. Additionally, 'soar in educational qualifications' is slightly awkward in this context. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning, it lacks the precision and natural collocation required for higher bands. Focusing on more academic collocations will help improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'as age of women increases' (missing article 'the') and 'hours spent by females on work related activities gets plummeted' (incorrect passive voice construction). The use of 'gets plummeted' is also grammatically awkward. While the meaning is generally clear, these errors occur frequently enough to impact the flow. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more error-free sentences and ensure that your passive constructions and article usage are accurate.
