Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the chart, including age and education categories. However, the overview is slightly inaccurate; for instance, stating that women spend 'most of their time' on leisure is not fully supported by the data, as working hours are significant in certain age groups. The reporting of data is generally clear, but some figures are presented in a list-like fashion without sufficient synthesis or comparison. To reach a higher band, ensure the overview highlights the most significant trends rather than just listing observations, and ensure all data points cited are accurate and clearly linked to the categories provided.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'By contrast', 'Despite this', and 'Similarly', which help guide the reader. However, the flow within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, and the use of referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the final sentence where the connection between the data and the conclusion is weak. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe trends (e.g., 'rose significantly', 'declined', 'constant rate'). However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and awkward phrasing, such as 'moved around to 27' and '75 plus more'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic descriptors. To improve, the student should incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing when describing trends. The errors in word choice do not impede communication but prevent the response from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('leisure and sports had fall'), incorrect preposition usage, and punctuation errors (e.g., missing spaces after commas). While the meaning remains clear, these frequent errors indicate a lack of control over complex structures. To improve, the student should focus on consistent verb tense usage when describing past data and ensure that sentence punctuation is accurate. Reducing the frequency of these minor errors will significantly improve the score.
