Student answer (Band 7.5)

The bar graph compares the average time, measured in hours, spent each week in 2009 on three primary activities by women with varying levels of educational qualifications and in different age groups.

Overall, women across all age groups and educational qualifications spent the most amount of time on leisure and sports. The average hours spent working increased till the middle age, after which they saw a decline, compared to time spent on household activities, which increased with age. Women with higher educational levels spent more time working than engaging in household activities.

With regard to age, women aged 15 to 19 spent only 6.9 hours working. The time spent working increased to 27 hours for women between the ages 25 to 34, after which it remained around 26-27 till the age of 54. Thereafter, it gradually declined, with women over the age of 75 spending only 1.3 hours every week. Time devoted to household activities, on the other hand, increased with age, with teenagers spending 8 hours weekly to women over 75 devoting 21.1 hours to it. Leisure and sports-related activities constituted the highest share, with every age group allocating the maximum time to it, especially women aged 75 and over at 51.7 hours a week.

Turning to educational attainment, women with less than a high school diploma spent the least amount of time working, at 10.7 hours. This figure increased with levels of qualifications, with women holding a bachelor’s degree and higher devoting 27.4 hours weekly. Leisure time, by contrast, saw a decline with higher educational attainment, decreasing from 43.1 to 28.6 hours. Time spent on household activities fluctuated across the group, decreasing from 20 hours to 15.2 hours.
