Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart compares the average number of hours per week that women spent on three main activities, namely working and work-related activities, leisure and sports, and household activities, according to their age and educational level in 2009.

Overall, women in all groups spent the most time on leisure and sports, except that the figure for work were relatively higher among some middle-aged women. In terms of education, women with higher qualification generally spent more time working, while those with lower education spent more time to leisure and household activities.

Looking first at age groups, women aged 15 to 19 spent only 6.9 hours on work, compared with 36.8 hours on leisure and 6.6 hours on household activities. the amount of time spent working increased to 22.1 hours among women aged 20-24 and reached 27 hours for those aged 25-34. It then remained around 26-27 hours for women aged 35-54. Among women aged 55-64, working accounted for about 29.9hours, while women aged 65-74 spent only 6.9 hours working. The figure was almost zero for those aged 75 and over.

Leisure and sport showed a different pattern. It was highest among the youngest women at 36.8 hours, fell slightly among the 20-24 group, and then remain between about 27 and 32 hours for most middle-aged groups. It increased sharply to 44.0 hours among women aged 65-74 and reached the highest figure of 52.7 hours for those aged 75 and over.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the bar chart well. You have successfully identified key trends across age groups and provided relevant data points for comparison. However, the task also required reporting on educational attainment, which is mentioned in the introduction and overview but is entirely absent from the body paragraphs. This is a significant omission that prevents the response from fully addressing all parts of the prompt. To improve, ensure that every category mentioned in the prompt is supported by data in the body of your essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by age. The progression of ideas is generally smooth. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Looking first at' and 'In terms of'. However, there are minor issues with cohesion, such as the abrupt start of the third paragraph and the lack of a concluding sentence or a more integrated transition between the age-based analysis and the missing education-based analysis. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different analytical focuses.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly. Phrases like 'educational attainment', 'remained around', and 'increased sharply' are used accurately. There are a few minor errors, such as 'spent more time to leisure' (should be 'spent more time on leisure') and 'higher qualification' (should be plural 'qualifications'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks the variety and precision required for higher bands. Incorporating more sophisticated collocations related to data description would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to follow. However, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'the figure for work were' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'remain between' (should be 'remained' to maintain tense consistency). Additionally, there is a missing capital letter at the start of the third paragraph. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for tense consistency and subject-verb agreement.
