Student answer (Band 5.5)

The chart shows the average number of hours per week, that women spent on three main activities ( working , leisure , and sports , and household activities) in 2009, classified by age and educational attainment.

overall, younger and middle aged women devoted more time to work, while older women spent considerably more time on leisure activities.

Regarding age, women aged 25 - 34 recorded the highest amount of time spent working, at approximately 28.6 hours per week. This figure gradually declined with age, reaching only about 3.3 hours among women aged 75 and over. In contrast, leisure time increased steadily as women grew older, rising from around 24 hours for teenagers (15-19) to over 51 hours in the oldest age group.

Household activites generally ranged between 6 and 8 hours, peaking among women aged 35-44 before decreasing in later life.

in terms of educational attainment, women with less than a high school diploma spent the greatest amount of time on households activites and least on the work.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have provided a clear overview and selected the main features of the data, such as the trends in work and leisure time across age groups. However, the response is somewhat underdeveloped regarding the educational attainment section. You mention that women with less than a high school diploma spent the most time on household activities, but you do not provide specific data points or comparisons to support this, nor do you mention the other education categories. To reach a higher band, ensure that all parts of the prompt are covered with equal depth and that data is consistently used to support your observations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In contrast' and 'Regarding age'. However, the paragraphing is slightly disjointed, and the final sentence about educational attainment feels tacked on rather than integrated into a cohesive analysis. The use of punctuation is occasionally inconsistent, such as the lack of capitalization at the start of the final paragraph and the irregular spacing around parentheses in the introduction. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring consistent formatting would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'educational attainment', 'recorded', and 'declined'. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'activites' instead of 'activities', and some awkward phrasing, such as 'least on the work'. To improve, try to use more precise collocations and ensure that your spelling is accurate throughout. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, it lacks the variety and sophistication required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that detract from the quality of the writing. For example, 'the least on the work' is grammatically incorrect, and there are issues with article usage and unnecessary commas, such as in the first sentence. Additionally, some sentences lack proper capitalization. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and punctuation would be beneficial.
