Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the prompt but fails to provide a clear overview or identify significant trends. The description of the data is fragmented and lacks analytical depth. For instance, the student lists data points like 'fifteen to nineteen age group' without effectively comparing them or highlighting the most striking features of the chart. The information is presented in a disjointed manner, making it difficult for the reader to grasp the overall patterns in the data. To improve, you should group related data points together and focus on identifying key differences and similarities rather than simply listing figures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks logical progression and effective paragraphing. While there are paragraph breaks, the internal structure of each paragraph is weak, with sentences often appearing as a list of observations rather than a cohesive analysis. The use of cohesive devices is limited and often repetitive or misused, such as the frequent use of 'is there' and 'furthermore' in inappropriate contexts. The lack of clear transitions between ideas makes the text difficult to follow. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would significantly enhance the flow of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, which limits the ability to describe the data with precision. Phrases like 'is there' and 'is high' are used repeatedly, which indicates a restricted range of expression. There is little attempt to use academic vocabulary or synonyms to describe trends (e.g., 'fluctuated', 'peaked', 'remained stable'). Many word choices are awkward or grammatically incorrect in context, such as 'education attainment by 2009'. To reach a higher band, you should focus on learning topic-specific vocabulary related to data description and varying your sentence structures to avoid repetitive phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede communication. There are significant issues with subject-verb agreement, sentence fragments, and incorrect word order (e.g., 'The bar chart down side given information'). The use of complex sentence structures is largely absent, and the simple sentences produced often contain errors in tense and article usage. Punctuation is also inconsistent, which further detracts from the clarity of the writing. Focusing on basic sentence construction—ensuring every sentence has a clear subject and verb—is essential before attempting more complex grammatical structures.
