Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the chart, such as the trends for different age groups and education levels. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you identify some key groups, you fail to provide specific data points or figures from the chart to support your observations, which is essential for a Task 1 response. The summary is also slightly disjointed, as it jumps between categories without a clear comparative structure. To improve, ensure you select key data points to illustrate your points and provide a more cohesive overview of the trends rather than listing observations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the flow between sentences is often mechanical. You use some cohesive devices like 'In addition', 'By contrast', and 'Furthermore', but they are sometimes used in a way that does not logically connect the ideas. For instance, the transition 'Now, turning into the details' is a bit informal for an academic report. The referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the different demographic groups effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band. You rely on repetitive phrasing, such as 'spend most of their time' and 'spend almost same amount of time'. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'academic standing' and 'prior activities' (likely meant 'primary activities'). To reach a higher band, you should aim to use a wider range of vocabulary to describe trends and comparisons, such as 'allocate', 'devote', 'proportion', and 'educational attainment'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('the given bar chart illustrate', 'women age between... has'), missing articles ('have bachelor's degree'), and incorrect word forms ('wherease'). While you attempt some complex sentence structures, they are often marred by these errors. To improve, focus on basic subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as these are foundational for achieving a higher score in grammatical accuracy.
