Average hours per week women spent in selected primary activities, by age and educational attainment, 2009
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The bar chart illustrates the average number of hours per week that women spent on three different types of activities in 2009, namely working and work-related activities, leisure and sports, and household activities. The figures are divided according to age group and educational attainment.
Overall, leisure and sports accounted for the greatest amount of time among most age groups, particularly older women, while household activities generally increased with age before declining slightly among the oldest group. In terms of education, women with lower educational qualifications spent more time on leisure, whereas highly educated women devoted more time to work.
Among women aged 15–19, leisure activities took up the most time, at 36.8 hours per week, compared with only 6.9 hours for work and 6 hours for household activities. Working hours increased considerably among those aged 20–54, remaining at around 22–27 hours. Leisure time fluctuated between approximately 28 and 33 hours during this period. For women aged 65 and over, leisure became much more significant, reaching 44 hours for the 65–74 group and 51.7 hours for those aged 75 and above.
Regarding educational attainment, women without a high-school diploma spent 43.1 hours on leisure, compared with 10.7 hours on work. By contrast, women with a bachelor's degree or higher spent 27.4 hours working and only 28.6 hours on leisure. Household activities ranged from 15.2 to 20 hours across the four educational groups.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have provided a clear and accurate summary of the main features of the bar chart. You successfully identified the key trends, such as the dominance of leisure time in older age groups and the correlation between higher education and increased work hours. The data is well-selected to support your points, and you have made relevant comparisons between the categories. The overview is concise and effectively highlights the most significant patterns. You have fully addressed all parts of the prompt, ensuring that the reader understands the primary relationships presented in the visual data without unnecessary detail.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
Your response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group information by age and education respectively. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'namely', 'in terms of', 'by contrast', and 'regarding' to link your points effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main analytical focuses. The flow of information is natural, and the referencing is precise, making the text easy to follow throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic task. Phrases like 'educational attainment', 'fluctuated between', and 'devoted more time to' show a solid command of language. You avoid repetition and use specific terminology to describe the data accurately. While the vocabulary is precise and fits the context well, it occasionally leans towards standard descriptive language rather than more sophisticated or uncommon lexical items that might elevate the score to the highest band. Nevertheless, the control is consistent and there are no errors in word choice or collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
Your writing displays a high level of grammatical accuracy. You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively, such as the use of participial phrases ('remaining at around...') and comparative structures. Punctuation is used correctly to manage complex sentences, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and you show good control over tense usage, particularly in maintaining the past tense to describe 2009 data. The structure is varied and supports the clear communication of the data.
