Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarise the data but fails to provide a clear or accurate overview. The information presented is often confusing, and the figures cited do not clearly align with the typical interpretation of such a chart. For instance, the mention of '22%' and '32.7%' lacks sufficient context, making it difficult for the reader to follow the trends. The response struggles to select and report the main features effectively, often listing data points without meaningful comparison or synthesis. To improve, focus on identifying the most significant trends—such as which age group or education level spends the most time on specific activities—rather than listing isolated, unclear percentages.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression of ideas is weak. While some cohesive devices like 'Furthermore' and 'In addition' are used, they are often placed awkwardly or do not effectively link the ideas. The referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult to understand which data points relate to which categories. The lack of clear transitions between the age-based data and the education-based data disrupts the flow. To improve, ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus and that sentences are connected by logical relationships rather than just mechanical linking words.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. There are several instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'recorded for largest proportion' and 'less then school diploma', which indicate a lack of control over collocation and word choice. The student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary, but it is often used inaccurately. To reach a higher band, you should focus on using more precise terminology for describing data, such as 'accounted for', 'represented', or 'constituted', and ensure that these are used with correct grammatical structures.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement, incorrect preposition usage, and punctuation errors, such as missing spaces after commas and periods. The sentence structures are generally simple, and attempts at more complex sentences often result in errors, such as 'The high school graduated and some college or associate degree made up 38.9%'. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring correct punctuation, and proofreading for common errors like missing articles and incorrect verb forms.
