Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The student attempts to summarise the bar chart by mentioning various age groups and educational levels alongside percentages for primary activities. However, the response falls short of the 150-word minimum requirement, containing only 148 words, which incurs a penalty on Task Achievement. Furthermore, the description contains numerous inaccuracies regarding the data, such as misinterpreting categories like percentages and age brackets, and the data points selected are disjointed and fail to present a clear, comprehensive overview of the main features and comparisons. Consequently, the response only partially addresses the prompt and lacks adequate development and clarity.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The response features basic cohesive devices such as 'Overall' and 'Furthermore', but the overall logical progression is severely disrupted by fragmented sentence structures and abrupt shifts between data points. Paragraphing is weak, with the text prematurely breaking off mid-thought at the end (e.g., 'college also 32.4'). Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult to follow which figures correspond to which specific categories or demographics. While there is a rudimentary attempt to structure an introduction and body details, the lack of cohesive control and incomplete delivery pull this criterion down to a lower band.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary related to the chart, such as 'leisure and sports', 'work related activities', and 'educational attainment'. However, there are persistent errors in word choice, spelling, and form throughout the response. Examples include 'parcentage' instead of percentage, 'achive' instead of achieved, 'speanding' instead of spending, and 'housing' instead of household activities. The lexical range is limited and basic, and the frequent inaccuracies occasionally impede the reader's understanding of the intended data points.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammatical range is extremely limited, relying heavily on fragmented phrases and simple structures that are frequently ungrammatical. There are major structural flaws, such as 'The bar chart provides the information about the parcentage of selecting primary activities to women in different age groups and spending educational attainment from 2009', where prepositional usage and clause formation are incorrect. Sentences often lack essential verbs or complete predicates, as seen in the final sentence 'college also 32.4'. Frequent errors in grammar and sentence construction cause considerable difficulty for the reader and distort meaning.
