Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response successfully covers both parts of the chart (age and educational attainment), identifying several key features and making comparisons. For instance, the student notes that leisure sports activities are 'dominated by every age of women' and specifically points out that women over 75 lead in sports (51.7 hours) while spending the least time on working activities. Similarly, comparisons are made regarding educational attainment, such as work-related activities dominating among bachelor's degree holders. However, the overview is missing, and the data is somewhat fragmented, with a tendency to list isolated figures rather than fully synthesizing the main trends. Furthermore, the response trails off abruptly at the end ('and some college as'). Consequently, the task is only partially addressed in terms of overall integration, earning a Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text is divided into two distinct paragraphs corresponding to the two charts, providing a basic organizational structure. However, the logical progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing and weak cohesive devices. The writer relies heavily on simple repetitive openings like 'Working activities are also...' and 'Similarly, working activities dominates...'. Paragraphing is used to separate the two charts, but the lack of an overarching introductory overview and the incomplete final sentence disrupt the flow. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the mechanical repetition of sentence structures means that overall cohesion does not rise above Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe numbers and categories such as 'leisure sports activities', 'household activities', and 'educational attainment'. However, the range is quite limited and repetitive, with frequent reliance on basic verbs like 'dominates' and 'spends'. There are also lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations, such as 'mark lead in the sports section by 51.7 of average' instead of 'lead in sports with an average of 51.7 hours'. Spelling is mostly accurate, but the lexical control is strained when attempting less common phrasing. These factors place this criterion at a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The following bar chart compares hours spent in primary activities by women of different age and educational attainment in 2009.' However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'working activities dominates', 'household activities dominates') and missing prepositions or articles (e.g., 'in age of 65 to 74 years'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the response cuts off mid-sentence at the conclusion, leaving an unfinished grammatical structure. The frequency of errors in basic grammar rules keeps the score at a Band 5.0.
