Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given graphical representation illustrates the average number of hours women across different age groups and education levels spend each week on primary activities.

Overall, it can be observed that most of the time is spent on leisure and sports activities, irrespective of their age or education. Furthermore, constant fluctuations can be observed in working & work related activities and household activities.

Initially, it can be stated that across all age groups, women of 75 & over have the highest count for leisure and sports activities, while having the lowest count for working and work-related activities. In stark contrast to this, women aged 15 to 19 are least involved in household activities.

On the other hand, women with less than a high school diploma invest more hours in leisure and sports activities, counting almost 43.1 hours per week, in contrast to this least hours were spent by women with a bachelor's degree and higher educational attainment are 28.6 hours. Moreover, women with education less than a high school diploma prefer doing more household activities compared to women with a bachelor's degree and higher education, who are mainly involved in working and work-related activities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting on the main features of the chart across both age groups and educational attainment categories. An overall trend is identified, noting that leisure and sports consume the majority of time. Key comparisons are made, such as contrasting women aged 75 and over with those aged 15 to 19, and comparing educational levels with specific data points like 43.1 hours and 28.6 hours. The information is generally accurate according to the visual data provided, fulfilling the core requirements of academic task 1 effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organised with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and distinct body paragraphs separating age groups and educational attainment. Cohesive devices are used adequately to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Furthermore', 'Initially', 'In stark contrast to this', and 'On the other hand'. However, some transitions and referencing feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes, ensuring the progression of information is easy to follow overall.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic report, incorporating terms such as 'graphical representation', 'educational attainment', and 'fluctuations'. Less common items are attempted with some awareness of style and collocation, as seen in phrases like 'least involved' and 'invest more hours'. There are minor awkward phrasings, such as 'highest count for leisure and sports activities' instead of 'greatest amount of time', but these do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and participial phrases (e.g., 'women with less than a high school diploma invest more hours...'). There are some minor grammatical slips and clumsy constructions, such as 'are 28.6 hours' following a relative clause structure, which disrupts the sentence syntax slightly. Nevertheless, punctuation is generally correct, and grammatical errors are infrequent enough that they do not impede comprehension.
