Average hours per week women spent in selected primary activities, by age and educational attainment, 2009
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The bar chart illustrates the average number of hours per week that women spent on three selected activities, namely work-related activities, leisure and sports, and household activities, according to their age and educational attainment in 2009.
Overall, work-related activities accounted for a relatively large proportion of women's weekly time among most younger and middle-aged groups, while leisure and sports became more prominent among older women. In terms of education, women with higher qualifications generally spent more time on work-related activities, whereas those with lower educational attainment devoted more time to household activities.
Among women aged 15 to 19, leisure and sports accounted for the largest amount of time, at about 37 hours per week, whereas only around 7 hours were spent on work-related activities. Work-related time then increased considerably, reaching approximately 27 hours among women aged 25 to 34 and remaining at a similar level among those aged 35 to 54.In contrast, the amount of time devoted to work declined considerably among older women. It fell to around 21 hours for those aged 55 to 64 and to less than 10 hours among women aged 65 to 74. Meanwhile, leisure time generally increased among the oldest groups, while household activities remained relatively substantial.
A similar contrast can be seen when the figures are classified by educational attainment. Women with less than a high-school diploma spent relatively little time on work-related activities, at around 10 hours per week, compared with approximately 21 hours among those holding a bachelor's degree or higher.By comparison, women with lower educational qualifications generally devoted more time to household activities, while those with higher qualifications spent a greater amount of time on work-related activities. The figures for leisure and sports varied less dramatically across the four educational groups.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
Ideas are logically sequenced, guiding the reader smoothly from an introduction and overall summary to detailed body paragraphs examining age and education respectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately and effectively. Cohesive devices are handled naturally without mechanical overuse (e.g., 'Meanwhile', 'In contrast', 'By comparison'), ensuring clear logical progression and reference throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a wide and flexible vocabulary range suited to academic reporting. Less common phrases such as 'educational attainment', 'prominent', 'devoted more time to', and 'varied less dramatically' are employed effectively. Word choice and collocations are precise, with only very occasional minor slips that do not detract from the clarity of the report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
A wide variety of complex sentence structures are utilised accurately, such as participial phrases and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'while leisure and sports became more prominent among older women', 'compared with approximately 21 hours among those holding a bachelor's degree'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and control over punctuation and grammar is strong throughout the entire response.
