Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the prompt by reporting information from the bar chart, identifying some key features such as the high level of leisure time for those aged 75 and over, and touching upon educational categories. However, the response contains significant data inaccuracies. For instance, the text claims that 'sports females spent 1.2 more hours in comparison with working females' for bachelor's degree holders, whereas the chart shows 28.6 hours for leisure and 27.4 hours for working (which is a difference of 1.2, but the phrasing is clumsy and confusing). Furthermore, the overview is poorly articulated and incomplete, failing to give a clear summary of the overall trends. The selection of data is somewhat random rather than focused on key comparative highlights, placing this response in Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is divided into paragraphs, which provides a basic structural framework. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions such as 'Moving further' and abrupt shifts between age groups and educational attainment without clear signposting. Cohesive devices are often mismanaged, leading to disjointed sentences—for example, 'Moreover, there was difference of only 1.6 hours in hours spent on working and sports activities...' Referencing is also faulty in places, making it hard to follow which group is being discussed. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is weak, resulting in a score of 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
Lexical range is limited and heavily repetitive, with frequent spelling errors (e.g., 'avereage', 'femals', 'crysatal', 'houes') and word-choice inaccuracies (e.g., 'household ladies', 'sports women'). The student struggles to use precise vocabulary to describe statistical data, relying on basic terms or awkward collocations like 'working females' and 'leisure and household activities respectively' used incorrectly in structure. While the vocabulary is adequate to convey a basic meaning, the high frequency of spelling and lexical errors places this firmly in Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control is poor. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout the text, such as missing verbs ('the teenage women, 6.9 hours spent in working'), dangling modifiers ('Furthermore, the age group of 35 to 44 females, they invest...'), and incorrect prepositions or conjunctions ('less then high school diploma'). Punctuation is also problematic, with random spaces before commas and full stops. Because frequent grammatical errors cause strain for the reader and impede smooth reading, a band score of 5.0 is appropriate.
