Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response attempts to address the task by mentioning various categories from the bar chart, such as working, leisure, and household activities across different ages and education levels. However, the selection of data is erratic and lacks a coherent overview. For instance, the overview sentence is incomplete ('...in year 2009.It contains three activities...'). Furthermore, some of the reported figures contain inaccuracies or confusion between categories, such as stating that those with less than a high school diploma spent 43.5 in leisure (compared to the actual 43.1). While some main features are touched upon, the overall development and selection of information fall short of a clear, structured summary, resulting in a Band 4.5 level performance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The essay lacks clear logical progression and adequate paragraphing. The introduction is poorly connected to the body, and the second paragraph fails to form a proper overview, trailing off awkwardly. Sentences are often disjointed, with mechanical transitions like 'While seeing by age (years)'. Paragraphing is virtually non-existent, as the text is clumped together into short, fractured blocks that do not guide the reader smoothly through the information. Referencing and cohesive devices are poorly managed or missing entirely, leading to a choppy and confusing read that aligns with Band 4.0 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, frequently relying on direct lifting from the prompt (e.g., 'average number of hours', 'primary activities each week', 'working and work related activities', 'leisure and sports'). There are noticeable lexical inadequacies and unnatural collocations, such as 'Bachelor's degree and higher level of women allowed to work' (misusing 'allowed') and 'highest level to work in house'. Word choices are often imprecise or inaccurate, causing strain for the reader and restricting the score to Band 4.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammatical range is extremely limited, relying heavily on simple sentence structures with frequent structural errors. There are numerous basic errors in punctuation, missing prepositions, and awkward phrasing, such as 'The given below bar chart illustrates' and fragments like 'As an overall trend it is clear that... in year 2009.It contains three activities...'. Subject-verb agreement and word order issues are common throughout the text. Because errors occur constantly and frequently impede clear communication, the response fits the Band 4.0 profile.
