Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, coming in at only 124 words, which negatively impacts task achievement. While the student attempts an overview and mentions some data points, the selection of information is limited and contains significant inaccuracies and vagueness (e.g., stating that those aged 15 to 75 spend 1.3 to 27.3 hours on work, which conflates age categories with educational attainment categories). The overview captures a valid point regarding the oldest age group, but overall the data reporting is disjointed and incomplete. To improve, the student must write at least 150 words, structure a clear overview of the main trends across both charts, and accurately report specific figures from the visual data without confusing the different categories.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into very short, rudimentary paragraphs, lacking a cohesive and logical flow. While there is a basic 'Overall' introductory sentence attempting an overview, the body sentences are disconnected and poorly structured. Cohesive devices are minimal and mechanical, and referencing between ideas is frequently unclear or confusing, particularly in the transition between age groups and educational attainment categories. Paragraphing is inadequate as sentences are fragmented rather than grouped into coherent thematic blocks. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to organise ideas into logical paragraphs with clear topic sentences and use a wider range of cohesive ties to connect information smoothly.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is very basic and limited, with frequent spelling and word-choice errors that impede communication. Examples of errors include 'female' instead of 'females', 'qulification' instead of 'qualification', 'liesture' instead of 'leisure', and 'porspectiv' instead of 'perspective'. The student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'working and work related activities', 'household activities', and 'educational attainment', but the lexical control is weak and repetitive. To improve, the student should expand their vocabulary range, focus on accurate spelling, and learn correct collocations related to data description.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are simple or attempt complex structures that result in severe grammatical errors and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'women age 75 and over spend more hours on liesture and sports and lowest hours on work' and 'on working and professional bachelor or higher degree holder spend most time'). There are frequent errors in verb forms, prepositions, plurals, and word order, which can cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student needs to practice forming accurate simple and complex sentences, paying close attention to subject-verb agreement, plurals, and prepositional usage when describing statistical data.
