IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the average number of hours that women in various age groups and women with varying levels of education spend on primary activities each week.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average hours per week women spent in selected primary activities, by age and educational attainment, 2009
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The bar chart compares the number of hours spent per week on three different activites, working and work related activities, leisure and sports, and households activities in 2009, based on various age and educational attainment.
Overall, It is evident that the time spent on the leisure and sports increased with increase of the age. In contrast, the share of time allocated for the leisure and sports decreased from lower level to higher level of education.
Regarding the age, women aged 15 to 19 spent 6.99 hour on the work related activities. The number saw a steady increased over the age, recording average hours of 22.1, 27, 26.3, 27.3, corresponded to aged 20-24, 25 to 34, 35 to 44, and 45 to 54 respectively. In contrast, old ladies aged 65-74 spent only a small portion of time on work, representing 6.9 only.
Based on the educational attainment, time utilised on the leisure and sports declined with the higher education. However, the time for household activies remained steady over the all categories.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially, resulting in a limited overview of the visual data. While the student attempts to summarise the bar chart by comparing activities across age groups and educational levels, the selection of data is erratic and lacks comprehensive coverage. For instance, the second body paragraph lists several specific numbers for work-related activities such as '22.1, 27, 26.3, 27.3', but contains a significant error in the introduction of the first figure ('6.99 hour') and misses key overarching trends across the entire chart. Furthermore, the final paragraph draws a confused conclusion about educational attainment, incorrectly asserting that 'time for household activies remained steady over the all categories', whereas the chart actually shows noticeable variation. Key features are therefore under-developed, and the overall progression lacks the thorough selection and highlighting required for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief overview. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate age-based data from education-based data. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. Transitions like 'In contrast' and 'Regarding the age' are utilised to structure the essay, but referencing and logical flow between sentences occasionally falter, such as the abrupt transition into educational attainment in the final paragraph. While the text is generally easy to follow, the progression of ideas lacks complete fluidity and clear overarching connections, making the structural organisation sit squarely within the intermediate band.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'educational attainment', 'allocated', and 'utilised'. However, there are noticeable lexical and spelling errors that impede communication and reveal limited control over word choice and collocation. For example, 'activites' is misspelled, 'households activities' uses an incorrect noun adjunct form, and phrases like 'with increase of the age' and 'declined with the higher education' lack natural phrasing. Furthermore, 'old ladies' is an inappropriate and overly informal register for an academic report. These vocabulary shortcomings restrict the lexical score, as precision and naturalness are lacking throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and basic complex forms with frequent errors. While there are some correct structures, frequent grammatical inaccuracies occur, including missing articles ('with increase of the age', 'from lower level to higher level'), incorrect prepositions ('correspond to aged 20-24'), and awkward verb tense or agreement handling ('the time for household activies remained steady over the all categories'). Attempts at complex structures are often faulty, and punctuation errors are present. These frequent errors cause occasional difficulty for the reader, placing the grammatical control firmly in the intermediate bracket.
