Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the task by summarizing some information from the bar chart, but the coverage is partial and lacks clarity. While an overview is attempted, it contains inaccurate generalizations, such as claiming that leisure and sports led with an average of over 25 hours across all categories, which does not accurately represent categories like working hours for older groups or those with less education. Specific data points are occasionally misreported or confusingly described, such as stating that those aged 15 to 19 spent most on leisure and sports and least on household activities, but including a garbled reference to 'Working % work related activities'. Ideas are limited and under-developed, with comparisons that are difficult to follow. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to select and report the main features more accurately without generalization errors, and present a clearer, more coherent overview of the data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response shows a basic attempt at organization, featuring an introductory sentence and subsequent body sentences, but there is no clear overall progression. The relationship between sentences is often disjointed, and referencing is frequently unclear, making it hard to follow the flow of information. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as repetitive transitions like 'followed by' and the abrupt phrasing 'similar with the women with all the age groups'. Paragraphing is also poorly managed, as the text is clumped into a single block of short, disconnected sentences rather than logically structured paragraphs grouping age and education data. To improve, the writer needs to ensure logical sequencing of ideas, use a wider variety of cohesive devices accurately, and structure the response into clear paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The writer relies heavily on basic terms borrowed directly from the prompt, such as 'average hours per week', 'primary activities', and 'educational attainment'. There are noticeable spelling errors ('lesiure', 'annd', 'activites') and awkward word choices or collocations, including 'least spent on household activities' and 'women who has less than a high school degree'. Furthermore, typographical errors like '25H' and symbols such as '%' instead of 'and' detract from the quality of the writing. To achieve a higher band, the writer should incorporate a wider range of precise vocabulary and paraphrasing, paying closer attention to correct word forms, word choices, and accurate spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple or faulty complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('women who has less than'), missing prepositions, and awkward clause constructions such as 'where as least spent on household activities' and 'across all the age groups and different educational attainments women spent'. Punctuation and capitalization are also erratic, with random capitalization ('Most') and missing commas. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from achieving a higher level. To progress, the writer must practice constructing accurate complex sentences with correct verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and proper prepositional usage.
