Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially and presents some inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the student states that women aged 75 or above spent most of their time in household activities, misinterpreting the chart where leisure and sports clearly dominate for that age group (51.7 hours compared to 19.6 hours for household tasks). Similarly, the overview is rather mechanical and fails to accurately highlight the most significant trends, such as the peak working hours for middle-aged women or the overall inverse relationship between age and leisure. To achieve a higher band, the response must accurately select and report the most salient features without misrepresenting the figures shown in the visual data, ensuring all parts of the prompt are fully supported by correct references to the chart.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates some organisation with paragraph breaks and basic linking devices like 'Overall' and 'Firstly', but it lacks a clear overall progression. The movement between age groups and educational attainment lacks logical flow, and cohesive devices are often inaccurate or mechanical, such as 'On other hands'. Furthermore, referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to follow the comparisons being made between different demographics. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of the paragraphs is disjointed rather than logically sequenced. To improve in this area, you should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that each paragraph builds a clear, logical argument or comparison that guides the reader smoothly through the data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Phrases like 'sports sctivities', 'house hold activites', and 'those women their age was' demonstrate a lack of precision in word choice, spelling, and collocation. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but these attempts often result in awkward phrasing or incorrect forms, such as 'greator then' or 'declined the work activity'. To move to a higher band, you should expand your range of vocabulary to describe trends precisely, use appropriate academic collocations without spelling mistakes, and ensure that word forms are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response features a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on basic patterns. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to numerous grammatical errors throughout the text. There are frequent issues with subject-verb agreement, relative clauses, and verb tenses, such as 'A large number of women... had spent thier most time' and 'Those women who have a bachelor degree, they were spent a lot'. Punctuation and article usage also show frequent errors that disrupt the reading process. To reach a higher band, you need to demonstrate a greater variety of grammatical structures with good control, minimising errors and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed accurately.
