Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response attempts to present information from the bar chart, but it only partially addresses the task requirements. While the student mentions a few isolated data points, such as the leisure activity for the 75 and over group at 51.7 and work-related activities at 6.9, the overall selection of features is incomplete and disjointed. The overview is weak and fails to capture the main trends across age groups and educational levels. Furthermore, there are noticeable factual errors in reporting the data; for instance, the text claims that 15 to 19-year-olds spent 36.8 on household activities and 6 on leisure, whereas the chart shows these figures are reversed for working and household hours. To move higher, the response needs to provide a clearer and more accurate summary of the primary trends and make relevant, correct comparisons across categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The writing shows some basic organisation, attempting an introduction, body details, and a concluding set of points, but it lacks an overall logical progression. Paragraphing is poorly handled, with ideas grouped somewhat randomly rather than following a coherent structure like grouping by activity or age. Cohesive devices are used minimally and sometimes inaccurately, such as the abrupt transition 'Moving toward the remaining activities', which does not smoothly connect the shift from age groups to educational attainment. Additionally, referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult to follow which data points belong to which demographic. Improving the clarity of paragraph structure and using more appropriate linking words would significantly enhance readability.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited and displays noticeable errors that frequently impede communication. There are numerous word form and vocabulary errors throughout the text, such as 'fuctuate' instead of fluctuating, 'educarion' for education, and referring to age groups as 'ladies'. Other awkward collocations like 'high school graduate highest' demonstrate a lack of precision. While the student attempts some topic-related vocabulary such as 'educational attainment' and 'primary activities', the frequent spelling mistakes and inaccurate word choices restrict the response. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their vocabulary range, ensure correct word forms, and use terms with greater precision and fewer spelling errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is quite limited, relying mostly on simple sentence structures with frequent attempts at complex sentences that turn out faulty. There are persistent errors in subject-verb agreement, plurals, and article usage, such as 'that female in various age groups' instead of females, and '65 to 74 year of women was spent time' which contains multiple structural errors. Verb forms and tenses are also mishandled, for example, 'worked vary with different aged'. Punctuation and phrasing often cause difficulty for the reader in grasping the intended meaning. To progress, the student needs to practice forming accurate complex sentences, improve control over basic grammatical structures, and eliminate frequent errors in agreement and verb forms.
